pocket

Track Listing

  1. Pocket
  2. Ticket
  3. LIFE – LOVE CiRCLE
  4. Pocket (Instrumental)
  5. Ticket (Instrumental)

1. Pocket

Ai finally does something about holidays and Pocket was the answer.  Kickstarting the era off with a wintry ballad, is pretty risky.  I don’t think it’s one of her best ballads since it is just piano and acoustic for majority of it.  It’s pretty, but when the guitars and drums come in, it does seem to get better, but I don’t really enjoy the song much…Don’t know why, but it’s not just that good to me.

2. Ticket

Ticket luckily makes things upbeat for us which is pretty awesome.  At the same time I’m gettin that retro feeling that I got with last single “PEACH/HEART” mainly on the secondary A-side.  It easily is a better track overall than “Pocket” since it took the strings and made it’s own.  I wish Ai did put this track on “LOVE LETTER”, but then again it’s pretty rare to see a B-side making to an album.

3. LIFE – LOVE CiRCLE

Another risk Ai chose was to do a full-on English track and LIFE – LOVE CiRCLE came to be.  Her accent is pretty obvious and it’s quite obvious she hasn’t had much of learning, but it’s enough to get her by.  Like, “Ticket” it’s pretty catchy and upbeat for her which is good.  There’s a little bit of Japanese which is where the chorus ends.  For her first try in a different language, it’s actually quite good.

Ai’s first single for the “LOVE LETTER” era was surprisngly a little safe for her (then again the whole era was just too safe).  Pocket was just a typical winter track, nothing more, nothing less.  Ticket and LIFE – LOVE CiRCLE were pretty upbeat, but it doesn’t stand out in her discography, at least IMO it doesn’t.  Still it is my least favorite single of the era.

Miliyah Kato – 20 -CRY-

20 cry

Track Listing

  1. 20 -CRY-
  2. Kanashimi Blue
  3. let’em go
  4. 20 -CRY- (INSTRUMENTAL)

1. 20 -CRY-

Just like the cover shows, the song sounds pretty depressing especially with just the instrumentation.  It’s a ballad of course and I’m pretty sure that Miliyah did herself pretty well with this track as it doesn’t show overall blandness that her past stuff has been throwing out.  I mean it’s not anything special when compared to other people’s ballads, but for Miliyah, this is pretty nice actually.

2. Kanashimi Blue

Great, at first I thought this was gonna be another ballad on the single and in some ways it still is because well there’s not a lot of instruments.  There’s only piano, bass, and beats which classifies it as an R&B ballad which usually is bland as it recycles the same beats and such.  That’s where the problem lies within the song as it just doesn’t sound anything new or surprising.  Call it a meh B-side.

3. let’em go

WTF Miliyah, you’re gonna pull the same shit again?  The second B-side pretty just replaced piano with an acoustic guitar and called it a new song basically.  At least it sounds a lot better than “Kanashimi Blue” because Miliyah is showing a lot more emotion in the song which worked.  The song still likes to drag at places, but this is quite good.

So Miliyah is still taking the bland road for her releases huh.  I’m prolly not gonna remember this single much because it’s just that bland.  It’s not terrible, well maybe Kanashimi Blue, but like 20 -CRY- and let’em go are better tracks for her, they aren’t the best of of what other people have done (makes sense right?).  Is it better than her last single….ehhh…maybe?  I don’t know but I’ll make that decision after I review “Love Forever”

GACKT – LOST ANGELS

Track Listing

  1. LOST ANGELS
  2. No Reason
  3. Suddenly
  4. LOST ANGELS (Instrumental)
  5. No Reason (Instrumental)
  6. Suddenly (Instrumental)

1. LOST ANGELS

I’m pleasantly surprised that LOST ANGELS begins with a beautiful orchestral opening that kind of goes back to what Gackt started out with, but then kind of a mood killer happens as the songs becomes a rock track from Gackt.  I mean I’m all for Gackt rock songs, but it would’ve been nice to have something from him that wasn’t rock since well the last 3 singles had rock tracks.  I do have to say the verses were nice as it was back into the piano + orchestral sound.  The chorus was all rock.  It seems like easy Final Fantasy music since it’s written in a nice epic way.  Good A-side.

2. No Reason

I was surprised the No Reason was even more hardcore then “LOST ANGELS” just for the fact it reminds me once again of “BLACK STONE”.  I do have to say that I enjoy there’s a hook to it and pretty steady and heavy on the beats.  Still, it’s kind of meh to me right now, so I can’t say I enjoy this track as much.

3. Suddenly

Suddenly oddly begins with a quiet instrumentation and in the background you can hear a dial-up tone like the one used in Ayu’s “Mirror/Mirrocle World”.  Then it becomes another rock track, but it does make itself stand out with it’s medium-paced feel to it.  It still feels a little less memorable and maybe somewhat boring as well.  I think it’s a track I have to get myself to like it.

Yeesh, Gackt’s 3rd of the project isn’t any better than “Faraway ~Hoshi ni Negai wo~ which is unfortunate especially since it has two B-sides tacked on it.  LOST ANGELS is really good, showcasing the epic sound that he usually puts out and could be the best of the 3 A-sides.  No Reason and Suddenly are alright, but they both have flaws that I’m pretty sure any fan of his would instantly pull out.  Hope “Flower” will end this right.
