Kana Nishino – Dear…/MAYBE December 1, 2009

Filed under: Kana Nishino — solarblade @ 1:35 pm

Track Listing

  1. Dear…
  2. MAYBE
  3. Yours Only, feat. WISE ~maison de m-flo~

1. Dear…

I guess it’s just my inner dislike of ballads and R&B together that bothered me through Dear… but at least I can actually say that my first Kana single is actually nice vocally.  I actually how strong her voice getting into the chorus of the song and her random inserts of English worked for me too and it didn’t seem like she had problems doing that either.

2. MAYBE

Well, it seems that Kana also loves releasing pop music as well.  MAYBE is clearly more to what she was like in the early singles of “LOVE one’s” era.  I felt that maybe the song could’ve been more exciting because I didn’t really find anything too interesting.  Honestly though the part with just the synth and piano playing was just not that good…  I don’t hate the song, but it needs work.

3. Yours Only, feat. WISE ~maison de m-flo~

Strange enough that Yours Only reminded me of “Dear…”.  It could be because of the closeness of the two though I don’t think it was a case of same melody.  Even though I’m not really feeling the R&B ballad arrangement, I was loving the song a whole lot more than “Dear…”.  The chorus is a bit more faster and full of English and I really liked that.  Then came WISE, who sounds like total shit here and should stop interferring with Kana xD

Since I’m new to Kana, I’m not entirely liking the whole cheese of the typical R&B ballad, but at least she has a good voice to fall back on.  Her pop music is a little better…Since it is the 2nd single of the era, I wonder what else she’ll pull off.

sifow – I Uta

Track Listing

  1. I Uta
  2. Sakura Shining

1. I Uta

For a cover that looks like something Kuu would (and has) done, I wasn’t expecting I Uta to be poppy or even remotely cute.  I Uta, is something different and sifow isn’t bad here.  There’s traces of rock, but there’s something that isn’t complete here.  The music feels a little too uninspired and feels really empty…especially when there could be more sound added.  Still it’s a nice way to begin a career.

2. Sakura Shining

Now the cover art would fit more with Sakura Shining.  It’s totally opposite to “I Uta” in the way that the song is more rock-inspired and focuses the energy in the music.  For that, sifow isn’t really amazing here and I find myself ignoring the track totally.  I’m pretty sure with more instruments and punch it would’ve made a great song.

Now, I’m not sure what sifow was trying to prove with her debut single, but I guess it’s alright for one.  The arrangements of course is what plagued the single, but somehow I Uta tries to be somewhat good…seriously though, the girl didn’t need to portray herself on the cover like that…definitely not fitting.

1. Asu wa Date na no ni, Ima Sugu Koe ga Kikitai

Changing up the serious factor for a more cute song, Asu wa Date na no ni is definitely uber cute and goes back to the more innocent days of H!P.  I’ll have to say though, the vocals are a bit jarring for me…but I guess it was expected huh?  I do like the synth bloops that pop in every so often and it does make the song even more sugary.

While I do think the S/mileage’s 2nd single is a step down from their debut, I can see them becoming a whole lot more interesting with their music.  Honestly, it feels like I found my answer to the loss of MilkyWay.  So I expect better things from them.

S/mileage – aMa no Jaku

1. aMa no Jaku

While this is their debut track, aMa no Jaku sounds kind of chill when compared with other songs that were released this year.  It’s quite cute and yet has this serious feeling that goes along with it.  Kind of like how Momosu’s “Nanchatte Renai” came out.  Now the girls all have solos in the songs and none of the stand out in a real bad way unlike Guardians 4 which they do.  It’s definitely not bad and is a better debut than a few other H!P acts.

Oh S/mileage, you are already starting your careers quite nicely.  aMa no Jaku is a more serious track in recent H!P days and at the same time kept the cute going.  I wonder if its going to get better.
