BEST HIT MEGA BLEND
1. Mamoritai ~White Wishes~
While BoA has been recently releasing stronger A-side since “Vivid”, Mamoritai ~White Wishes~ feels like something I’ve heard before from here. Maybe something back on “VALENTI”? I don’t know but she’s been going back to her R&B roots and it’s nice because Mamoritai is a nice winter song that doesn’t fall under the mediocrity of other winter songs. I really like BoA’s vocals here for sure and she made the song pretty strong.
2. THE END Soshite and…
While this is the first song BoA had full control over in its making, THE END Soshite and… is also a nod to her past styles. Sadly, I didn’t feel this song so much as much as “Mamoritai”. I’m not sure why but I think this felt a little off for me. BoA’s vocals were also pretty shaky at points in the song as well. Not a really memorable B-side.
3. BUMP BUMP! feat. VERBAL (m-flo) KOZM・MIX
On the first press editions of the regular edition, we get a remix of her last A-side, BUMP BUMP!. While it does have a more edgier electronica feel instead of the more urban flow, it’s not exactly the most interesting thing. VERBAL’s rap here is so much more annoying to listen to, but c’mon, without him it would’ve been so much more easier to listen to. There’s parts where I thought the synths were genius, but otherwise…not a great remix.
4. Mamoritai ~White Wishes~ (English Version)
It took them long enough to get BoA singing an English version of a track again. While I wonder if this’ll be on her next American album, the English version of Mamoritai gives BoA a chance for her vocals to shine. In my opinion, she’s gotten a whole lot better since her last English self-cover of “KEY OF HEART”. She still does have her slip-ups and it’s understandable, but since “BoA”, she’s definitely gotten stronger in pronunciation. Lyrics are a whole lot better to so that made me happy too.
5. BEST HIT MEGA BLEND
Really, again? If you’ve followed BoA for a while you will quickly remember this mega-mix from back two…TWO singles ago. Returning from “Eien/UNIVERSE/Believe in LOVE”, BEST HIT MEGA BLEND features most of the bigger hits. It’s unfortunate they didn’t add to it or anything so on here, it’s useless…just a poor idea from SM.
While there’s talks about a new album, BoA’s winter single (which is also a tie-in with Tales of Graces) came out nice enough. Both the Japanese and English versions were enjoyable and from the preview, so is BUMP BUMP!’s remix. THE END Soshite and… wasn’t as good, but it’s a better B-side as of recent. BEST HIT MEGA BLEND has no reason to be on here so that’s a big no-no.
