Yousei Teikoku – one December 24, 2009

Track Listing

  1. one
  2. Gekkakou
  3. one (instrumental)
  4. Gekkakou (instrumental)

1. one

It’s finally time that we got back to the awesome stuff Yousei is capable of.  one is definitely a song that borrows epicness from previous songs like “Schwarzer Sarg” or even “Gekkou no Chigiri”.  I love the strings lines throughout because of the dropping of notes during the instrumental parts of the song.  Yui’s vocals are more or less what we’ve come to know and somewhat love.  Not bad from the group.

2. Gekkakou

Gekkakou is oddly enough a better song than “one”.  It might be because of the chorale being used here and the more edgier epic sound it has overall.  It feels like classic Yousei Teikoku music so it comes off as a little surprise that it turned out better than I thought it would.

Ending off this year, Yousei Teikoku released one which goes back to the normality of what the band releases.  Though Gekkakou was better, this isn’t a bad single and I sense a third album will be out in two years XDDDD.  Still, good single overall.

HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR – XYZ

Track Listing

  1. XYZ

1. XYZ

Yeah, I had to go back to review this.  If there was something to make me drop my jaw and question my liking to the group, this solidified that HandMC is just amazing when they take a break and return.  The guitars are very furious and Yuusuke is up to his normal angsty screaming which always adds a new side to their music.  This time however, we have a new singer in the band’s lineup and that would be HALCA, or I like to call her Maaki pt.2 because she sounds exactly like her.  Powerful song from the group for sure and it ranks up there with “PRIDE” and their other big hitters.

Yeah, I know I’m going back in time to review this single and I’m probably not going to review “good bye” simply because it sucks XD.  XYZ was a great return to music, even though the band was pushed into Spice Records.  SONY definitely are getting more dumber with each group they kick out…

HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR – RED

Filed under: HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR — solarblade @ 2:54 am

Track Listing

  1. RED

1. RED

RED being a digital single was sadly the only track, but it continues to show growth for the group since this song is powerful.  HALCA has really set herself in the group and honestly she’s definitely the right choice to replace Maaki.  Now the song feels like it’s lightened up from “XYZ”, but still keeps this hardcore sound going.  Yuusuke here in the song returns to being the growling/screaming backup to her and if just feels so natural.  RED definitely needs a PV, but I already think HandMC is starting a new era and it’s as strong as the Maaki era.

Yeah, we know HALCA can sing but how did she do with the 3rd digital release, RED?  I think the band and her are doing very well with themselves and if RED is signifying another album, then I’m all for it because “swamp man” is still the shocker of the year being all HALCA & awesomeness.

sphere – A.T.M.O.S.P.H.E.R.E

  4. Treasures!!
  5. Kimi no Sora ga Hareru Made
  6. Rakugaki Dictionary
  7. Dangerous girls

  9. Super Noisy Nova
  10. Joyful×Joyful
  11. Sayonara SEE YOU
  12. A.T.M.O.S.P.H.E.R.E

1. Future Stream

I’m not sure why but I love Future Stream like crazy.  It might be the longing feeling the song has, or it could just be the synth arraangement that kept me in the entire time.  I know I shouldn’t botch and moan but Haruka Tomatsu is like the guillotine to the group and it shows because her high pitched singing just sucks when compared to Minami, Aki, and Ayahi’s more stronger vocals.  Still, a breakout A-side if you ask me.

2. Hontou Dakare Komarun da

The first new track, Hontou Dakare Komarun da represents the more recent sound of sphere.  Just like the previous sing (which oddly missing in action on the album) this song is a bit more like the normal idol-pop that has been helping them.  I can say the four seiyuus worked a bit better together with the acoustic arrangement in the song and it’s not bad.  It’s also a mid-tempo tune so I can actually enjoy some of it.

3. PRINCESS CODE

Oh god the opening is just to cute for words and that’s just because it’s ~la la la la la la la~.  Now if “Hontou Dakare Komarun da” was cute, this was just basically the sugar coated frosting on top.  I’m not usually into these kind of songs, but I can tell that the girls sound better since they’re suiting towards Haruka’s vocals.

4. Treasures!!

Oh hi! Buono!  Yeah, this song definitely screams them for sure since it’s more of a rock-based pop idol song moreso than the other tracks of the era.  Being the B-side from “Future Stream” at first I didn’t like the unevenness of the song, but since then I’ve actually gotten to enjoy it more and more and it’s one of their best songs of the era.  Sometimes I consider it better than “Future Stream” and other times it’s vice versa.

5. Kimi no Sora ga Hareru Made

Haha, I guess we’re continuing with the Buono! styled songs with Kimi no Sora ga Hareru Made and while it has stronger guitar riffs and rhythms, the best thing that might uphold “Treasure!!” is the stronger vocals.  They seem to harmonize so much better here and there’s not as many solo lines throughout.  Great song.

6. Rakugaki Dictionary

Rakugari Dictionary however beats that song hands down.  Even though we’re back to some Haruka awkwardness, everyone else is singing amazingly and while the song to me feels a little somber, it’s really nice and catchy too.

7. Dangerous girls

Coming in as the B-side to “Super Noisy Nova”, Dangerous girls is one of their more powerful hitting tracks on the album and strangely I’ve also grown to enjoy it immensely.  Why do I feel like coming back to Buono! with each rock track from this group?  Honestly, the best part of the song is the ad-libbing found at the beginning and the verses with solo lines from all the members.  It worked nicely for sure.

8. Dream sign

I guess adding a catchy clapping beat makes for a good song right?  Dream sign is like the other pop/rock songs on here, but with another catchy guitar riff.  This is the first time I’ve really disliked hearing Haruka in the song period because she just sounded so nasally high that it just took me outta the song.  It does get so much better after her part though so it’s not a total loss and the whole ~shop with you~ line is cute and catchy.

9. Super Noisy Nova

Being the era’s second and “final” of the era, Super Noisy Nova actually bored me to death on the album.  While the other songs do have a certain anime flow to them, Super Noisy Nova’s was quite obvious and it sounds oddly similar to some other songs.  The only difference is probably the cute synth/violin arrangement mix.  Still not entirely a fan of it.

10. Joyful×Joyful

Oddly enough, the song that I’d expect to have uber amounts of cute written within turns out to be a ballad.  I haven’t heard the girls try out a ballad before so I was kind of wondering how would the group work together to get by on one and it seems they did quite nicely.  The arrangement could’ve been a little more exciting, but it’s nice otherwise.

11. Sayonara SEE YOU

Oh, but the song I thought was going to be a ballad turns out to be one of the most exciting songs off the album.  I love the opening with the loud brass intro and it turns into this giddy pop tune.  Now this feels like what the group should be initially used for.  It’s the right kind of excitement for me XD.

12. A.T.M.O.S.P.H.E.R.E

Being the title track, I came into this song not knowing what was going to happen especially considering how energetic that last song was.  A.T.M.O.S.P.H.E.R.E started out slow and I was like oh…ballad…but then the opening ended and it turned into something that can parallel “Sayonara SEE YOU” but with guitar.  Even the members are yelling out the lyrics which is sweet and honestly this song just pwns everything else beforehand since it’s got a not so straightforward arrangement and various time changes…I loved it!

Song of Avoidance

  • Super Noisy Nova

Talk about an album that surprised me at how good it turned out.  The era itself now looking at it, turned out to be just a small piece before the whole cake was served and A.T.M.O.S.P.H.E.R.E proved that four seiyuus can get away with a really good album.  While there wasn’t anything that’s like Future Stream, the rest of the songs are amazing and I hope they stick together for a long time.  I’m kind of happy that they left off “Kaze wo Atsumete/Brave my heart” since it probably would’ve brought the album down.

Karen Girl’s – Fly To The Future

  4. Zettai love×love Sengen!!
  5. FULL THROTTLE
  6. MY WINGS
  7. Bye! Bye! Bye!

1. Pikatto Kiratto! Dash Girl’s

Well, I guess I’m running into a genki filled album because simply, The girls are definitely shoving down the cute down my throat and it’s strange.  Not bad, but not exactly what I was hoping for.  While the girls, Ayami, Yuika, and Suzuka are really young in this release, their vocals are actually not horrible and sound kind of something H!P like, mostly the early C-ute days.  The music feels the same too, but I feel like there’s more energy and the brass helped here too.  Not a bad start.

2. Over The Future

Being the girls first single, Over The Future really surprised me because it felt like an actual Nami Tamaki song mixed with H!P.  I really loved the electric guitar riffs and the girls alot here.  Give or take the few cringe-worthy genki moments and honestly it’s one of their best songs released.

3. Top Secret

Being the B-side off of their 2nd single, “MY WINGS” I was really agitated here with the opening here…I’m quickly getting annoyed by that.  The ladies get solo lines and oddly enough they sound pretty strong even though they are pretty flat when it comes down to it.  I might’ve been too hard on it during the single, but on the album, it’s not too bad, but seriously take out the yelling.

4. Zettai love×love Sengen!!

I was wondering what I was going to get with their next new song off the album and I was happy to hear a more synth-fronted arrangement instead of the typical sound of the last few songs.  It’s got that idol-pop sound down to a t and to me it sounds like a FFX-2 themed song because I get deja vu through various parts like the song’s instrumental.  I liked this though.

5. FULL THROTTLE

OIC Karen Girl’s…there’s the FFX-2 homage XD.  For a song called FULL THROTTLE I was expecting a high-edged song that moved quickly, but sadly that role was taken by “Over The Future”.  Though I’ll admit that the song has great vocals from the girls and once again features solo lines that make me smile because they’re pretty good.

6. MY WINGS

Since this was the group’s 2nd single, I was enjoying this a bit as a single, but on here it seems to be overshadowed by the other songs off the album.  I love the fact that MY WINGS has strings in it and works like a Nana Mizuki anime song because it does work for them.  Still one of the shockers to be released and I liked it a lot.

7. Bye! Bye! Bye!

I love the opening to the final song because it just felt so fantasy-like.  However, it shows the girls singing abilities aren’t that great in the song.  I’ll give them a benefit of the doubt since the song’s arrangement is cool.  I like the piano lines and the use of brass throughout.  I might regret it but I think it’s a great ending to an album.

Unfortunately, the group broke up right after this was released and that’s kind of sad because they were going somewhere with their music.  While I’ll miss them, Fly To The Future wasn’t a bad album idol-wise.  It has peppy songs and some slower songs to mesh together and honestly, not bad.  Maybe we’ll see a reemergence of at least one member in the future.
