Ayumi Hamasaki – You were…/BALLAD December 28, 2009

Filed under: Ayumi Hamasaki — solarblade @ 12:12 pm

Track Listing

  1. You were…
  2. BALLAD
  3. RED LINE ~for TA~
  4. You were… (Music Box mix -retake version-)
  5. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ (Orchestra version)
  6. You were… -Instrumental-
  7. BALLAD -Instrumental-
  8. RED LINE ~for TA~ (Instrumental)

1. You were…

Really Ayu?  You’re pulling off another “Days” three singles later?  I really could not really get myself into this song because it doesn’t really stand out when compared to previous winter songs like “POWDER SNOW” or even “No way to say”.  It is however somewhat better than “Days” because of its stronger hitting chorus and overall stronger winter feel.  Her vocals are quite sweet and right (I was worried, especially with that “evolution” performance).  It’s alright.

2. BALLAD

Damn, I think she’s trying to recreate “Days/GREEN”…BALLAD is obviously a ballad of course and the opening his a slight oriental feel to it and while that was nice, it was reminding me somewhat of “GREEN”.  Likewise, the chorus is where the song shines the brightest and I have to say, the more flowing arrangement worked moreso here than with “You were…”.

3. RED LINE ~for TA~

While the song meaning is for Team Ayu, RED LINE is oddly enough the only mid-tempo track off the single.  Her vocals seems like she’s gone back a few albums with that tone of hers, I like it, and the song doesn’t put me in bored mode.  It might be a little like “Life”, but it’s done right and made the single better IMO.

4. You were… (Music Box mix -retake version-)

It’s strange to have a music box/orgel version of the main song on a single (unless you’re Kanon Wakeshima, then it’s perfectly excusable).  The arrangement feels quite cute and since it is the only instrument/sound of the song it’s kind of appropriate for the song.  Ayu is also present and she’s all by herself with no vocal help either so you’ll hear her more clearer.  Her singing is alright, but she’s yelling a little bit and her vibrato is kind of shaky, but not a bad version of the song at all.  OMG, there’s someone rewinding the music box bout midway through the song as well…

5. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ (Orchestra version)

I wonder why we got an orchestra version of Sunset and not of Sunrise…Anyways it’s nice to see orchestral versions because most of the time, Ayu can pull these off gracefully and once doesn’t disappoint on this single.  Beautiful strings, even more beautiful playing from the harp.  It’s a little worrysome that Ayu’s vocals here aren’t at their brightest no more, but the song is really pretty.

While I do think the single is a little bit like, oh deja vu with “Days/GREEN”, You were…/BALLAD is a pretty nice package of songs, but I really want her to move on from ballads and get back to epic stuff like “Rule/Sparkle” or even “evolution” but I guess this era is just going to be laidback.  RED LINE did sort of filled that gap in, but once again a little bit of deja vu as well with the song.  So much for that NEXT LEVEL huh?

RIZE – Pink Spider

Filed under: RIZE — solarblade @ 12:07 pm

Track Listing

  1. Pink Spider
  2. GHOST
  3. Why I’m Me “The Reason Why I’m Me”

1. Pink Spider

Yeah, most people would recognize this track as a cover of hide’s original track and yeah since it was his kind of suicide song, Pink Spider has gained a notorious amount of interest, hence RIZE’s try to cover it.  Anyways knowing RIZE’s past stuff, there cover is definitely them since it’s edgy punk-rock.  I really love JESSE’s voice for some reason because it’s got that flair and personality that seems to be missing.  As much as people dislike this because it’s not hide’s, RIZE’s isn’t too bad and the energy is just off the wall and epic.

2. GHOST

The first B-side off the single, GHOST to me feels like a ska song since it’s more laidback and relaxed when compared to “Pink Spider”.  We also get to see JESSE do his rapping here as well and it’s pretty impressive and I like that the chorus is in English at least and it’s catchy as well.

3. Why I’m Me “The Reason Why I’m Me”

The other B-side though returns to the hard rock seen in the A-side.  It’s actually a lot more harder hitting as well since it’s got more guitars and mixes in with JESSE’s rapping as well making it a formittable tune.  It’s definitely a rush to listen to and it’s great.

Pink Spider marks the return of the band since they went on a hiatus for about 4 years before returning with this single.  Pink Spider welcomes us back into RIZE’s hard-hitting sounds and I really like it.  I might not have heard the stuff before this, but I’m guessing the break did em’ good since this single rocks hard!

Team DEKARIS – Koi no Dekaris

Track Listing

  1. Jingle
  2. Koi no Muteki Command
  3. Unmei wa “I” Love You
  4. Yuujou Try Again!
  5. Koi Shoku Puzzle
  6. Sweets×Sweets
  7. Muzukashii Kedo Aishiteru ~Dekaris~
  8. Koi no Muteki Command (Off Vocal)
  9. Unmei wa “I” Love You (Off Vocal)
  10. Yuujou Try Again! (Off Vocal)
  11. Koi Shoku Puzzle (Off Vocal)
  12. Sweets×Sweets (Off Vocal)
  13. Korubuchika -Miracle Angel Dolls MIX-

1. Jingle

Wow, only 5 seconds and all it is is just the group saying their name?  WOW, I’m totes impressed…

2. Koi no Muteki Command

I can tell almost immediatly that SEGA had something to with this release because of the Sonic-like music that accompanies the song (and not the Jun Senoue kind).  Since it is the first vocal track, Koi no Muteki Command seems to be somewhat a harsh listen because well, the girls are pretty off vocals-wise and sounds like whining and genki mixed together.  Not the most interesting song.

3. Unmei wa “I” Love You

At least the next track at least tries to fix the problems of the last track.  There’s a little bit of an Indian sound that opens up the song, but the song becomes less of that and kind of becomes a more catchier track.  I love the bridge where there’s solo lines between 3 of the four members which is awesome…but let’s not forget there’s a 4th member there XD.  Pretty catchy.

4. Yuujou Try Again!

Next up, is the somewhat odd song.  It starts off muffled a bit and you hear a cell phone vibrating before one of the girls answers it and it goes into a more less exciting version of “Koi no Muteki Command”.  It seems that the verses were as if the girls were talking through the phone and the choruses were the full sounding gals.  It’s not too exciting, but at least it’s passable.  The synth solo in the middle was pretty cool though.

5. Koi Shoku Puzzle

Now this sounds like something H!P typical.  Yes, it’s full of cuteness and brass…might not be tasteful, but the vocals are kind of more relaxed (except for two of the members who just love to use uber cuteness to get through the song.  I’m sorry but I’m just turned off with this song with the bad vocals.

6. Sweets×Sweets

The closest thing to electronica on this album/VA, Sweets×Sweets are just using a whole lot of synths and 16-bit sounds here and I actually enjoyed this arrangement because it doesn’t have really terrible vocals and even then the girls are using vocoders for the song.  It might be a little like something Perfume would approve of, but damn this is a good song if you ask me.

7. Muzukashii Kedo Aishiteru ~Dekaris~

The longest song, and I’m guessing this acts as the credits at the end of the Tetris game its tied to, Muzukashii Kedo Aishiteru is unsurprisingly the lone ballad here.  It tries to show how good the girls sound togetherm but it falls quite short because they are just fighting to be the loudest singers.  The arrangement is also lacking a bit, but the trumpet solo are cool I guess, but this is a vocal wreck.

8. Korubuchika -Miracle Angel Dolls MIX-

I’m not sure what this has to do with the OST….I do love this remix because it’s so random.  They start off wit hthe girls and some guys talking before they say ~SEGA~ and then the classic song “Korobeiniki” starts to play with the girls basically saying random shit and being straight up genki for the 1:31 length of the rest of the song…it’s nice they did do something with the classic Tetris tune, but really? this?

Song of Avoidance

  • Koi Shoku Puzzle

While this might be a one-release type deal group, Team DEKARIS’s debut was oddly enough classified as an OST for a Tetris game.  Now the music is for the most part upbeat and would sound fitting to the game, but on its own only those two tracks are listenable…Not sure why, but the other songs are just sad to me, even the nice enough rearranged version of “Korobeiniki” wasn’t that good.
