MEG – SECRET ADVENTURE April 23, 2010

Filed under: MEG — solarblade @ 12:13 pm

Track Listing

  1. SECRET ADVENTURE
  2. GRAY
  3. SECRET ADVENTURE (SL REMIX)

1. SECRET ADVENTURE

Why do I get such deja vu vibes from SECRET ADVENTURE?  I mean when there’s no video to be accounted for and this song sounds just like “OK”….”HEART”….”TELEPHONE”…the list goes on and it’s kind of running dry here.  What I mean the song has this rather cute vibe that the songs mentioned has and done better as well.  This also reminds me of some Perfume as well.  Oh Nakata…are your ideas starting to run dry?  MEG’s vocals are back to the weird pronunciations as well…ugh oh well.

2. GRAY

Ok, so GRAY might be a little more interesting since there’s nothing like it right now.  I think GRAY is all-English as well which is pretty interesting nonetheless but the instrumentals are so much more better than “SECRET ADVENTURE”.  I’ll admit that the song needs time to get used to, but I actually like this song quite a bit so that’s a plus.  It’s a pretty quirky tune and one of Nakata’s more good sounding tunes.

3. SECRET ADVENTURE (SL REMIX)

Rounding out the single with a remix of the A-side, this one is more edgier and has harder hitting synths to kind of make it more cooler.  The problem I had with the song was that it just felt like there was something missing to make it sound fuller, but the repeating parts of the chorus was epic and the part with just the synths were good but the verses just felt so lifeless.  The synth arrangement doesn’t really change to much either so that’s also kind of eh.

As the only single representing the new album for MEG, SECRET ADVENTURE feels like “PRECIOUS” all over again except the A-side was bland and unoriginal, the B-side was more intuitive and interesting since it was all English as well and the remix had its ups and downs.  I’m unsure if Nakata is losing his spark but SECRET ADVENTURE would be a good reason to think that he is.

Junko Akimoto – Ichimai no Shashin

Filed under: Junko Akimoto — solarblade @ 6:16 am

Track Listing

  1. Ichimai no Shashin
  2. Hoshi Furu Yoru ni…
  3. Ichimai no Shashin (Original Karaoke)
  4. Ichimai no Shashin (Ippanyou Karaoke Han’on Age)
  5. Hoshi Furu Yoru ni… (Original Karaoke)

1. Ichimai no Shashin

After the rather nice “Tasogare Love again”, Ichimai no Shashin continues this rather smooth feel that we got with the last A-side.  Maybe a little more sadder, but it also feels like something I would’ve heard a long time ago since it has the oldies feel to it and I kind of like that a lot.  I don’t know what kind of guitar that is playing in the song but it was kind of cool.  Junko’s vocals are once again pretty to listen to and deep as well.  Good A-side

2. Hoshi Furu Yoru ni…

As for the B-side, Hoshi Furu Yoru ni… might be a little more upbeat than “Ichimai no Shashin” but I didn’t really find anything to exciting about the song.  I mean ok, Junko’s vocals are pretty good and the woodwind solo was a nice touch as well, but this sounds like something I already heard numerous tumes before.  Might grow stronger over time, but right now this really didn’t catch my attention.

After going off on that jazz tangent, Junko returns to what she does best and Ichimai no Shashin hits the spot quite nicely.  I think Junko’s done really well with A-sides since her debut and that’s def a good thing.  Although Hoshi Furu Yoru ni… is a little sameish, it’s alright.  Maybe another single like this would be nice before the official 4th album.

sphere – REALOVE:REALIFE

Track Listing

  1. REALOVE:REALIFE
  2. Tenohira ni Yume
  3. REALOVE:REALIFE (Off Vocal)
  4. Tenohira ni Yumi (Off Vocal)

1. REALOVE:REALIFE

Oh hi SCANDAL what are you doing here?  Honestly, who really expected the 4-nin group to release a rock song after doing anime-pop music for their last single?  REALOVE:REALIFE is actually really catchy and the solo lines were pretty nice except for this one girl who’s vocals are so seiyuu-y that they kind of ruin the mood of the song…I don’t think it’s Haruka Tomatsu…but I think it’s Aki Toyosaki.  Still pretty good for their 4th A-side!

2. Tenohira ni Yume

Now this is the sphere I’m used to.  While it’s the total opposite to “REALOVE:REALIFE”, this song is probably to make the song as cute and innocent as possible and it worked since the song is a ballad.  There isn’t any solo lines present in the song and for me that’s a bit easier since we get to hear harmonizations throughout.  I actually liked it just as much as the A-side.

I’m surprised I didn’t even hear this single being announced…REALOVE:REALIFE is definitely the group’s best single released so far.  The A-side is definitely not what we’re used to and it does exactly sound like a girlier SCANDAL track to be quite honest.  Tenohira ni Yume is a nice and sweet little tune to go along with the single and that’s why this single is their best so far ^_^

Yousei Teikoku – Baptize

Filed under: Yousei Teikoku — solarblade @ 4:34 am

Track Listing

  1. Baptize
  2. call my name
  3. Baptize (off vocal)
  4. call my name (off vocal)

1. Baptize

While I really enjoyed “one”, Baptize goes back to what we really know from the group and I don’t mind it at all because the energy in this song is amazing and Yui sounds amazing as well since she has the same amount of power and her voice is pitchy, maybe a little hectic since the arrangement calls for it, but still pretty awesome.  Add in a chorale and some great string parts and you get Baptize.

2. call my name

Slowing things a little bit for the B-side, call my name is definitely trying to make things a bit more melodic and less chaotic and I thought they did this song right.  There’s also synths involved as well making it a bid more different than “Baptize”.  Made a great B-side as well!

Just like their last single, Baptize definitely is a step in the right direction for the duo.  I love their edgier rock stuff more than their meh anime releases and it seems since “Schwarzer Sarg”, they’ve been getting better produced and better songs out than before!  Another strong single!
