Mai Kuraki – Mou Ichido May 22, 2011

  2. Mou Ichido -Instrumental-

1. Mou Ichido

Wait, another ballad as an A-side?!?  I’m still riding on the waves from “1000 Mankai no Kiss” and she throws another one out there…made even less sense that there’s just an instrumental along with the song.  Unlike the last A-side however, this one sounds like it’s being slightly nostalgic because it reminds me of her old ballads.  Now, her vocals sound great and it mixes with the slow atmosphere well, but it does sound a bit like her old stuff too much….ehhh

I’m surprised that of all artists, Mai-K would release a 2-track single with no B-side.  It’s rather unlike her.  Without it the single kind of fails since Mou Ichido isn’t really anything special or anything we haven’t heard before.  I still think “1000 Mankai no Kiss” ranks as the bestter song.

Sayaka Sasaki – Zzz

Track Listing

  1. Zzz
  2. Gakkou Gakkou LIFE!!
  3. Zzz (Acappella Version)
  4. Zzz (Bossa Nova Version)
  5. Zzz (Instrumental)
  6. Gakkou Gakkou LIFE!! (Instrumental)

1. Zzz

Oh Sayaka, can you please stick to a style please?  When I first started up Zzz I was expecting something like her last single or her debut but I found that Zzz is pretty damn embarassing for Sayaka.  Unlike previous songs, this one is like a fantasy of a 5 year old seriously.  It’s like cute and with Sayaka also singing in that tune it gives off a cute and sugary vibe that I just didn’t really enjoy.  I mean it does give her more variety, but I was just hoping this wouldn’t be this single.

2. Gakkou Gakkou LIFE!!

Which bothers me more when I get into the single’s B-side.  Unlike the cute and slower vibes of “Zzz”, this track is definitely more cute and genki than before with electric guitar thrown in for some arranged variety.  It’s pretty damn awkward to be honest and Sayaka is seriously sounding like Koharu Kusumi during her solo days.  I really don’t know why it had to be done this way x.x;

3. Zzz (Acappella Version)

Cutting the song in half is an acappella version of the main song and while it’s a nifty try, you’d think she’d do a slightly better job and singing the song.  It still feels cute and her background stuff is kind of nice, but it’s not really helping to change my outlook of the song.

4. Zzz (Bossa Nova Version)

Back at full length of the song, we get a remix as well with the arrangement changed from something cutesy pop to something like the title implies.  Vocals are still nothing to really go over, but the arrangement is slightly better for the song though.  Maybe, this should’ve been how the original should’ve sound.

Uhm, Sayaka’s 4th single and it had to be a bust?!?  Seriously, this single is a total 180 from her previous three singles that it’s apparant that this was going to be an awkward single for her fans.  What was worse was that B-side….I rather erase that from my mind.

AKB48 – Everyday, Katyusha

Track Listing

  1. Everyday, Katyusha
  2. Korekara Wonderland
  3. Yankee Soul (Type-A only)
  4. Hito no Chikara (Undergirls) (Type-B only)
  5. Anti (team Kenkyuusei) (Theater Edition only)
  6. Everyday, Katyusha (off vocal ver.)
  7. Yankee Soul (off vocal ver.)
  8. Hito no Chikara (off vocal ver.)
  9. Anti (off vocal ver.)

1. Everyday, Katyusha

By going of the cover, it seems this song is going to be the summer song from the mega-group which I remember the nightmares I got from their last one, “Ponytail to Chouchou”.  This one actually sounds relatively different and good enough to stand out from the other A-sides since it feels like a Russian tune, especially the arrangement in the beginning.  It does make me think that their producer took notes from Tsunku’s “Onna to Otoko no Lullaby Game”.  Sadly, after a while the song gets repetitive and is way too long for its own good.  It’s better than “Chance no Junban” though XD

2. Korekara Wonderland

The main B-side found on all singles, Korekara Wonderland really pulls you into the past with it’s 70’s Soul music and I actually found it oddly cute and yet so much easier to swallow than friggin “Everyday, Katyusha”.  The vocals are also much much better for some reason as well which gives the song a better chance.  Why this wasn’t an A-side beats me but this is so much better.

3. Yankee Soul

I’m not sure what to really classify Yankee Soul for some reason.  It’s lacks the vocal prowess that “Korekara Wonderland”, but it retains the fun atmosphere in a great way.  It’s interesting nonetheless, but there’s something that doesn’t feel very AKB here…but more H!P oddly enough.  I guess it’s an alright song, but nothing like the previous track.

4. Hito no Chikara

The other B-sides are from other areas of the AKB family.  Hito no Chikara comes to us from the Undergirls and it seems they also got the short end of the stick on the single because this has the least amount going on in the arrangement.  It does feel like oldies, but not sure of what timeline really.  It does seem like it could be catchy in intervals.  Though why am I hearing male background vocalists???

5. Anti

team Kenkyuusei also gets a track with Anti and funny how it’s even cuter than “Everyday, Katyusha” and yet it’s a bit better than said track as well.  It doesn’t seem as positive as it should, but I like the way it flows.  Guitars are awesome and so are synths.  Vocal-wise…I’m struggling to decide if they are that good or on the line of being meh.  Not bad…

Even though this isn’t on their upcoming album, “Koko ni Ita Koto” (album was pushed back because of the Japan earthquake), Everyday, Katyusha isn’t really that amazing, but I wasn’t really expecting it to be really because summer songs done by idol groups aren’t that amazing.  I think Korekara Wonderland and Anti were the best to offer but not as strong as some of their other works.  That leaves us with Yankee Soul and Hito no Chikara and while they weren’t amazing, they did bring new styles for the single so I guess that’s ok.  I’m guessing our next single will be something amazing! I HOPE!
