SPYAIR – Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!) June 10, 2011

Filed under: SPYAIR — solarblade @ 10:56 pm

Track Listing

  1. Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!)
  2. Crazy
  3. LINK IT ALL

1. Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!)

There’s something about SPYAIR and their rockin’ style that makes me giggle on the inside because it’s upbeat and interesting to listen to because it’s not too serious nor trying to go in that direction.  Samurai Heart really pulls that in with children chanting the ~samurai heart~ in various places while Ike (the band’s vocalist) goes on with his singing.  I actually enjoyed this song and feels pretty much like a fun song to listen to on a sunny day.

2. Crazy

I also knew that they also had a serious side to them and Crazy was a surprise for me.  There’s a lot more focus on some of the synths that Enzel (their DJ) uses and it’s kind of interesting.  To me SPYAIR here sounds like a combination of UVERworld and FLOW (recently).  I loved the darker instrumentation and glow with this song and I oddly prefer it more than “Samurai Heart” oddly enough.

3. LINK IT ALL

Then they decided to top off the single with a slower track with LINK IT ALL.  I enjoyed they took off with a rock ballad with this one and we get to pay attention more to Ike’s vocals.  They aren’t bad persay, but they don’t stand out like other rock bands which might be unique on its own strange way.  After a while it does kind of drag, but it’s still a nice song and it feels right on this single.

Even though I should’ve started reviewing them when their third single, “Japanication” was released…no leaked it out and still hasn’t to this day and it’s making me a sad panda.  So I guess my first review of this band is their 4th single (and more than likely their last in their first major label era), Samurai Heart is a solid release from this band.  I like the positive energy the main track gave in and then loved the darker tinged Crazy even moreso and then finally coming to a soft close with LINK IT ALL.  This group definitely has the properties to be something amazing in due time IMO.

faylan – TOMOSHIBI

Track Listing

  1. TOMOSHIBI
  2. Subarashii Sekai e
  3. TOMOSHIBI (off vocal)
  4. Subarashii Sekai e (off vocal)

1. TOMOSHIBI

I’m a tad disappointed with the era so far except a few A-sides.  Luckily she comes back with TOMOSHIBI which is quite good despite being another rock song from her.  Unlike previous A-sides like “Honnou no DOUBT” and “Shuumatsu no Fractale”, this one has a pretty good riff to it and there’s some hooks to go along with it to make it pretty memorable.  I also feel her vocals were better as well doing better than many of her past songs.  Pretty awesome of a song.

2. Subarashii Sekai e

I don’t think there was any B-side that has really disappointed me in the era to be honest.  Subarashii Sekai e is quite the opposite to “TOMOSHIBI” in the way it was presented.  Unlike the rockin’ arrangement, this one is a ballad that has a beautiful arrangement and faylan’s vocals stood out much stronger as well especially when the song grows more and more.  It isn’t as dramatic as “Senjou ni Saita Ichirin no Hana” but it’s pretty close.

As the era’s 5th (or 6th) single in the era, I’m starting to want an album from faylan because she has too many singles for one era.  Luckily TOMOSHIBI is one of the better singles of the era since both songs are pretty strong and surpass many of the era’s other songs.  I am a little worried that the album will have too many rock songs that kind of suck and have one or two good songs (especially if she’s adding B-sides to it).  Who knows at this point, maybe this single won’t be mentioned on the album *shrugs*

Akiko Shikata – Byakumu no Mayu ~Ricordando il passato~

Filed under: Akiko Shikata — solarblade @ 6:25 am

Track Listing

  1. Pitalacta ~Yozuki no Mai~
  2. Pantalea
  3. Gensourin
  4. Ta ga Tame no Sekai
  5. Byakumu no Mayu ~Ricordando il passato~

1. Pitalacta ~Yozuki no Mai~

Starting this single off, is Pitalacta and it’s a smooth track featuring the sounds of nature and a vast amount of interesting tribal ideas.  I love it since it’s so interesting and mystical to listen to.  Of course I have to look at Akiko’s vocal performance and in the beginning she was light and operatic, but becomes something else once the main arrangement comes in.  She gets into her strong operatic mode with a smidge of that shima-uta style enka singers utilize and it’s just an interesting mix with the blazing music.  Not sure how to otherwise describe the song, but it’s pretty damn good to listen to.

2. Pantalea

I’m sensing a little theme going on in the song since the flutes appear here as well, but the music is a little more joyous.  Akiko’s vocals seem to be on a higher pitch than before and I left the oriental vibes and shimasen being an important part of the song.  It’s fun and lighthearted and folkish in a way.  I loved it!

3. Gensourin

Unlike the upbeat nature of our last two tracks, Gensourin has a more streamlined feel by being a bit more sullen and depressing of a song.  There’s not a lot to the song in it’s arrangement other than this kind of ethereal sound.  Akiko’s vocals are still in the higher pitch but there’s also this much deeper presence in the song…and I’m sure it’s her as well.  It’s a beautiful mixture to be honest but the song isn’t as radical like the previous two so it’s a bit weird on the single.

4. Ta ga Tame no Sekai

See what I mean?  Our next track speeds things up again with a frantic opening and then empties out to this light and sort of gothic kind of folk track.  I love Akiko’s faster-paced vocals since it’s energetic and makes the song come to life in various points.  I think of the five songs, this is my favorite.

5. Byakumu no Mayu ~Ricordando il passato~

Ending the single with the title track…(strange…A-side at the end of a single?).  Byakumu no Mayu is a pretty effervescent kind of song that does remind me slightly of “Gensourin” a little bit.  I do think that her opera vocals stand out a lot more than before and it’s a heavenly track to listen to.

Akiko’s 3rd single is a bit weird since the A-side is the last track, but I felt altogether, this was a nice release.  All the tracks felt different and gave us a great combination of slow songs and sweet vocals from Akiko.  I will say that Byakumu no Mayu might not be her best A-side, but it’s worth listening to for the other songs on here.

mihimaru GT – Masterpiece

Filed under: mihimaru GT — solarblade @ 12:27 am

Track Listing

  1. Masterpiece
  2. Hajimari no Ippo
  3. Masterpiece (Instrumental)
  4. Hajimari no Ippo (Instrumental)

1. Masterpiece

I’m kind of surprised that Masterpiece brings the duo into a rockin’ atmosphere.  I will say that I was surprised by HIROKO’s speedy vocals at the beginning of the song.  Given the tie-in to the new Yu-Gi-Oh series that’s playing in Japan, this was interesting choice.  miyake doesn’t have as a big of a role compared to her but it’s interesting nonetheless.  I’m not sure what to think of the song since it’s not a normal GT song if you know what I mean.

2. Hajimari no Ippo

Unlike the A-side which has a prominent rockin’ atmosphere, Hajimari no Ippo seems to fit amongst the likes of “Torokechou Dandy~” and “Un♥Lock” since both are pretty much summer songs of their era and this feels like one too.  miyake also has a bigger job doing his raps amongst the lighthearted brass sound.  It’s light, but it suited them nicely and doesn’t feel strange, unlike the previous song.

After releasing their last single, “Omedetou”, their ballad best-of, and doing their solo activities, it’s nice to see mihimaru GT back together for another single.  However, Masterpiece is a bit of an odd choice of a comeback track.  I love the guitars and arrangement, but HIROKO’s vocals don’t sound that intriguing and her fast parts were weird and add in the fact that miyake had little to do in the song and you get something forgettable.  Hajimari no Ippo though is a good summer song and features both members better.  I wonder what’s next for them.
