1. RL

As the intro of the album, RL is kind of empty of an intro, but it does its job well considering the lack of instrumentation.  I mean it’s Emi playing something (more than likely keyboards) but this is pretty useless as an intro considering it leads into “Identity” lol.

2. Identity

It did somewhat work since it began with bongo drums and it turns into this rather aggressive synth/rock mixture.  I didn’t think it really captured the initial feel of the band prior so this was more experimental in my opinion, but I think they tackled the song quite powerfully thanks to Ichiro’s vocals.  I do consider this the worst of the three A-sides released prior to the album, but it’s not a bad song to be honest.

3. Monochrome Tokyo

A new track appears in between the two A-sides and I must say that Monochrome Tokyo reminds me of “Slow Motion” with the 80’s new wave sound but a little more focused on a beat and Ichiro’s vocals.  I love that the verses are rather quiet and then the chorus brings a nice breath of fresh air.  I will say the chorus reminds me of “Identity’s” but that good because it fits better with a song like this.  It’s quite awesome of a song!

4. Rookie

I still can’t get off of loving this song!  Rookie is just so dramatic yet powerful in the way it was handled.  I love the way Emi works her magic in this song and it works with the way Ichiro was singing the song being all fluffy and effervescent.  It’s a great song to listen to and while it might not be full of the rock the group has shown so far, this is experimental done right.  It might comes off as long but it’s just how the song comes off as.  Best A-side of the era!

5. Antares no Hari

After “Rookie” comes a string of new songs and Antares no Hari is a bit more upbeat and lively than the previous track so it might comes as a little bit of a surprise.  It does have this interesting funk style going for it and it’s interesting nonetheless but coming after some pretty epic tunes, this feels a little underwhelming at the most.  The synth solo in the middle of the song was cool though, won’t lie about that lol.

6. Kamen no Gai

Our next track did bring the rather interesting DEVO-esque style back with Kamen no Gai and I really felt like I enjoyed this one more since it reminds me of some school food punishment which might be not as surprising but whatever.  I liked this tune since it’s spazzy and very futuristic.  An improvement after “Antares no Hari”.

7. Ryuusen

Then comes the longest track of the album at six minutes in length.  I was pleasantly surprised that after the first six, Ryuusen would begin with natural instruments lol.  With the acoustic guitar being the base of the song it felt so light and dreamy to listen to.  It’s a very melancholic tune and yet it grows into a loud song.  To me, the song is very empty since the lyrics seem so sparsely heard…it’s nice but it needed more lyrics than repeating the title and slow-paced stuff.  Emi does place some weird synths in the song later on…but the tune stops at about 4 and a half minutes…the rest is just instrumental (like “RL”).  It really did feel like it was never gonna end and just lost my attention even before the mid-way point.

8. Endless

After that snoozefest, I came into Endless which begins with piano and made me wonder if it was gonna be a ballad.  Fortunately it isn’t because of Keiichi’s quick drumming (though light).  I like it since it’s got a little bit of punch and the second verse has this cool synth melody that I just approve.  Good lil tune here.

9. DocumentaRy

So here we are at the title track of the album.  It starts with Ichiro and Emi having a conversation? before synth bloops pop out and then grows into this kind of abstract piece of work.  It’s almost wanting to be a club beat, but it’s too light for that.  Oddly enough this is an interlude basically since Ichiro doesn’t sing and it’s only really Emi doing the work in the song.  It’s interesting but a little long and repetitive (at least until more bloops and bleeps are added).

10. “Bach no Senritsu wo Yoru ni Kiita Sei Desu.”

It did sound fitting that “DocumentaRy” came before it since they have the same thumping beat, but a little more oomph going for it.  I kind of like the positive atmosphere in this song and while the amount of singers for the chorus reminds me of “Identity” but everything else is quite nice.  It’s danceable and I love the melody…still doesn’t rank better than “Rookie” but this is still good stuff.

11. years

I’m not sure why they put the B-side from “Bach no Senritsu…” onto the album since to me it was one of the weaker tunes B-sides-wise.  I mean it’s still good and all that but the slow and dreary feel of this song rivals up with “Ryuusen” but has a little more life to it.  I guess I can see why it was chosen, but there were MUCH better choices IMO.

12. Document

Closing out the Regular editions of the album, we have another title song?  Ehhh, unlike most of the songs previous it’s more tame and uses more of a natural sound which is once again a nice change after everything before.  Though being that, it once again comes off as a rather sleepy tune like “Ryuusen”.  Luckily, there’s more things that I enjoy about it.  It’s has a better flow and there’s a good chorus as well.

13. Holy Dance Like a live Mix

Of course the limited editions would have an extra track.  However, it’s a new version of Holy Dance from the “Identity” single.  I honestly don’t hear the differences between the original and this version so it might be something that has to do with the title I guess.  Anyways, Holy Dance is such an interesting tune and despite it being so odd closing the album, it’s a really good song from them.  It’s like a mix of the synth stuff towards the front and “Bach no Senritsu…” it’s just good heh.

I must say that since a lot of people have said it’s their best album yet, I’m afraid to listen to their older stuff since I think DocumentaLy isn’t amazing or anything.  I mean granted they are pretty unique with their sound which feels like a more experimental school food punishment.  They have their great stuff but when they take Emi out of the picture (or make her do less) it becomes really boring and just not them.  I think it’s an album to warm up to since the songs have that good synth/rock feel…but iono.

One Response to “Sakanaction – DocumentaLy”

Being a big fan of Sakanaction, I too believe this is their best album yet. I’ve seen someone said their music is “slow poison” and that’s the most apt description because it does always take time to warm up to, and then it’s just addiction all the way xD So don’t be afraid to listen to their older stuff. Every album they’ve done so far is different from the previous, I like that they experiment a lot.
I personally liked Monochrome Tokyo best from the album. I actually thought Ryuusen was a nice break but yeah, a tad long. Endless is also another new favourite (the band spent 8 months working on this song; it also has a really cool PV posted on youtube). And I feel the same as you about years, but Ichiro has an attachment to the song apparently.
Oh, something cool I discovered with RL…listen to it with your right earphone once through, then your left earphone. 😉
And yes, Rookie is one of their best songs ever. ❤
