Maika – Yada yo… May 13, 2012

Track Listing

  1. Yada yo…
  2. Molly feat. LGYankees
  3. Chikai

1. Yada yo…

It seems to have been quite a while since we’ve heard Maika last and she returned after a break with Yada yo… which is a little different than what I’ve heard before.  It’s a ballad but it’s slightly poppy as well which makes it an easier listen.  Maika’s vocals seem to have improved from “Kokoro” but she still sounds out of breath all over the song and the squeaks sound rather abrasive.  It’s not all that bad but at least she’s showing improvement with her sound!

2. Molly feat. LGYankees

I know I have heard of LGYankees before but I do not know where for the life of me lol.  They don’t seem to do much in the song since I’m not exactly sure where I’m looking for them…well…that is until they start rapping which is an interesting twist (and probably Maika did this because of her collaboration from “Kyouka Suigetsu”.  The song is still quite light and kind of bores me in places…

3. Chikai

I think of the songs of the single, Chikai is a lot like her previous releases.  I mean it’s mostly acoustic guitar which is her strong suit and her older vocals seem to have returned here which might be a positive or negative thing to be honest.  Take it as you wish, but if you didn’t like her past sound in her vocals (croaky, nasally, and the like) this isn’t your song.

Wow it has been quite a while since Maika released something…last was “Kokoro” of last year.  Yada yo… shows that Maika has taken some vocal lessons and seem to be getting slightly better tone quality than stuff in her debut album.  She did kind of bored me with this release but that’s OK since we get to hear her new style of singing (sans Chikai).  Hopefully it won’t take too long to release another single.

Super Junior – Opera

Track Listing

  1. Opera
  2. Way
  3. Opera -Korean ver.-

1. Opera

I have to admit, while this is another one of those K-pop turned into J-pop tunes, it is one of the group’s more intricate songs (at least Japanese-wise) they’ve done since it isn’t as formulaic like “Bijin” and “Mr. Simple”.  Well meaning is that it has substance and not just one of them “K-pop songs”.  It’s a bit slower which is something I wasn’t expecting but I do like it since it fits the whole theme of the song (which isn’t an opera, mind you!).  It doesn’t have as strong of a hook like their previous two songs, but it’s dark and still very much enjoyable!

2. Way

Like with their last single, “Mr. Simple”, the B-side is an original song and once again also is a ballad.  It’s kind of simple just like how “Snow White” was but less wintry.  Like how I felt before the song really feels underwhelming under “Opera” which is no surprise because I don’t think SuJu is really well-made for ballads as simple as this one!

3. Opera -Korean ver.-

So the original from the “Mr. Simple” mini in Korea also takes place on the single and while it wasn’t promoted like the Japanese version it still sounds good!  Well to be honest, would it really be drastically THAT different?  Not really so if you like the original, you’ll enjoy the Japanese and vice versa lol.

SuJu’s third single and oddly enough not an original A-side is quite different from what they’ve done in Japan thus far.  Opera (and its Korean version) were pretty cool and unusual in ways but it sure is enjoyable!  Way is kind of boring and very white and bland for me.  They need on their ballads if they wanna be amazing!

SID – S

Filed under: SID — solarblade @ 7:00 am

Track Listing

  1. S
  2. Rainy Day
  3. Utahime (Live from “3.16 SHOOTING LIVE”)

1. S

After all my complaining so far in this era, S totally blew me away with it’s edgier atmosphere and risky nature which is something I’ve been craving since “Ranbu no Melody”.  The arrangement does have a certain UVERworld qualiy that I enjoy but with Mao’s vocals which are quite expressive and strong to listen to.  Definitely one of my favorites from SID yet!

2. Rainy Day

The B-side is more or less something they’ve been doing for A-sides since the end of the “dead stock” era ended.  It’s a lot lighter of course and has more of a laidback setting compared to “S”.  Sadly since it kind of does follow in the reins of “Nokoriga” it’s kind of boring for me and lacks colors where the A-side had so much of.

3. Utahime (Live from “3.16 SHOOTING LIVE”)

From the “sleep” single, Utahime always stood out to me as a fun song to perform and it carried over to its live version.  They sound great live and they purely sound like they were having fun performing this tune.  Not much more to say though but it’s a solid live.

After being so ehhh for a while, it was great to see SID burst the door down with S (funny though how it was only released about a week after “Nokoriga”).  S was just badass and is right now the best this current era has for them (not counting B-sides).  However, the fact the A-side ended up so good didn’t really lend itself to its B-side in Rainy Day which is kind of more of the same from SID that they’ve been releasing in recent days.  The live version of Utahime was good however…so overall it was a good single ^_^.
