Maon Kurosaki – reimei August 14, 2012

Filed under: Maon Kurosaki — solarblade @ 8:09 am

Track Listing

  1. reimei
  2. Hiyoku -Contrast with you-
  3. reimei <instrumental>
  4. Hiyoku -Contrast with you- <instrumental>

1. reimei

I wasn’t surprised that reimei wouldn’t be as hard-hitting as anything from “HELL:ium” but it’s really nice to see her go back to something that’s like stuff from her second album.  reimei is pretty much your typical anison song which could be bad but to me it’s all right but nothing like her last two singles sadly.

2. Hiyoku -Contrast with you-

I have to say that “reimei” does sound like an opening theme, but Hiyoku definitely has that closing theme part down so it quite works as the B-side.  I like the dramatic feel of the song but that’s really about it for the song because it’s super slow and while Maon sounds amazing, she just can’t keep the song interesting (at least for me).

I’m surprised at the drop from “HELL:ium here.  Of the four singles she’s released since her debut, reimei is probably her worst single.  I mean both songs reek of typical anime fare and it just doesn’t cut it this time around, especially how amazing her stuff has been.  I guess she needed a bad single and this would be it.  I do like reimei more than Hiyoku..but both are just kind of bleh from her.

miwa – Hikari e

Filed under: miwa — solarblade @ 7:31 am

Track Listing

  1. Hikari e
  2. Napa
  3. HiKARiE Remix ~English version~
  4. Hikari e ~instrumental~
  5. Boku ga Boku de Aru Tame ni (bonus track)

1. Hikari e

At least the song isn’t a cover of that One Piece theme XD.  Hikari e marks as an interesting departure for miwa!  Instead of her normal and natural sound, the song has dance beats and miwa under some auto-tune giving this rather unique sound (but she’s still playing guitar).  To me, I felt like she was being risky and the song turned out pretty well for her because I found myself entranced by the song.  It’s a great A-side and definitely is most unique song in her discography currently.

2. Napa

If you were looking for more of what she’s been releasing since her debut, Napa is definitely in that direction but it’s also quite simple of a song when compared to the last couple of releases.  miwa’s vocals are quite something and she sounds carefree and light which adds to the atmosphere of the song,  If you were a fan of any of the songs during the “guitarissimo” era. them you’ll like this.  Otherwise “Hikari e
still outranks this by a big shot, but this isn’t a bad song to couple it with.

3. HiKARiE Remix ~English version~

A remix of Hikari e?  This is a first for miwa in so many ways.  I mean a remix and singing in English?  I have to say that the auto-tune is still present and it sometimes makes miwa’s pronunciations sound weird.  I actually think it isn’t a bad rendition because she sounds lively and the song has more charm with the English.  The arrangement has added more dance beats and synths to fill out the spaces and the led to a pretty solid track!

4. Boku ga Boku de Aru Tame ni

I’m surprised that the last track is called a bonus track since it’s a Yutaka Ozaki cover.  Now this is also a song that fits into her last two albums with its pop/rock arrangement.  It’s a nice track and a worthy cover song but on this single it just gets overshadowed by everything else on this single XD

miwa really kicks things off her 3rd album era with a surprising single in Hikari e,  No one suspected that she would’ve went the dance route with the lead track (and it’s English remixed version) and somehow made it work for her in a good way because this is my favorite A-side since “Otoshimono”.  Napa is a nice song and keeps to her original style in good fashion and the cover song sticks as well, but c’mon the A-side is really the winner here!

ClariS – Wake Up

Filed under: ClariS — solarblade @ 6:44 am

Track Listing

  1. Wake Up
  2. Nakanai yo
  3. a moment
  4. Wake Up -TV MIX-
  5. Wake Up -instrumental-

1. Wake Up

I have to say that the duo really works better when there songs aren’t pop/rock tracks like their last single.  Wake Up steps into more of a cuter zone which isn’t in bad taste because it works with the two gals.  It’s definitely their lightest A-side yet, but I kind of like its charm for sure.

2. Nakanai yo

The first of the B-sides, Nakanai yo tones things down for this ballad.  It’s a pretty song to listen to and I really like the vocal melodies in the song as they stood out from the arrangement quite nicely.  As for said arrangement, it’s pretty simple with piano/strings/some percussion.  I wouldn’t have minded this being an A-side either.

3. a moment

I was kind of hoping a moment was going to be another fast piece, but it turns out that it’s another ballad here.  I notice the main difference is that the arrangement is more keyboard fronted than in “Nakanai yo”.  I kind of feel like I’m listening to the same song again with just a different arrangement…a tad disappointing.

I’m happy ClariS is continuing on after their debut album and Wake Up is a good start since it’s better than a couple of their previous singles.  Wake Up has a really cute but not excrutiantingly painful song and it’s definitely a better song than “Naishou no Hanashi” was.  Of the B-sides it’s really one or the other because the second song you hear, you’ll be thinking…they sound alike!  To me, I prefer Nakanai yo over a reason…but some might be the other way around.  It’s an all right single overall.

Mai Kuraki – Koi ni Koishite/Special morning day to you

Filed under: Mai Kuraki — solarblade @ 3:03 am

Track Listing

  1. Koi ni Koishite
  2. Special morning day to you
  3. Koi ni Koishite (Instrumental)
  4. Special morning day to you (Instrumental)

1. Koi ni Koishite

Working with GIORGIO again, Koi ni Koishite sounds like it was going back to the olden days but then when the long string instrument solo…Koi ni Koishite continues to express the sound that was from her last album, “OVER THE RAINBOW”.  It’s no surprise the song didn’t really do much for me because it kind of sounds like the stuff from said album a bit too much.  The chorus is nice and Mai-K’s vocals are soothing (except for this squeaky high notes) but the song is just not hitting it for me.

2. Special morning day to you

Beyond the terrible title for the song (seriously, can we word this any worse Yoda?), Special morning day to you doesn’t really change the mood much, but the instrumentation has changed from an R&B setting to more of a pop/rock ballad.  I like that it kind of has a certain “touch Me!” flaie to it, but it still doesn’t really catch my eye.

Starting a new set of singles up, I really wasn’t too phased by the single sadly.  I will say that Special morning day to you stood out more because it had a much stronger atmosphere and sounds rather unique to her style.  Koi ni Koishite kind of suffered from bland syndrome.  I wonder if she’ll bring something more exciting next time.

faylan – Realization

Filed under: faylan — solarblade @ 2:34 am

Track Listing

  1. Realization
  2. My Life
  3. Realization (Off Vocal)
  4. My Life (Off Vocal)

1. Realization

I seem to be rather on and off with faylan’s lead tracks but at least Realization is probably her strongest A-side in recent times with a great mix of synths and rock, all blending into this heavy track.  If “Dark Side of the Light” was fixed, I’m sure it’d come out sounding this powerful and so strong.  It’s almost at the same level as “Dead END” and “Soukyuu no Hikari”…it’s a really good song!

2. My Life

As for the B-side on the single, My Life is definitely a brighter song to listen to and it actually is kind of unique in faylan’s discography because it’s straight up pop/rock in the same vein as YUI or miwa.  I think it stood out because it is a happier song and faylan pulled itt off quite nicely.  However, it’s not jaw-dropping as some previous B-sides.

Making up after “WHITE justice”, Realization picked up the slack and faylan delivered a pretty strong single, still not the best (which is still “Dead END/Soukyuu no Hikari”).  Realization though is her best A-side which is definitely a good thing for her but My Life isn’t really memorable despite being something new (or haven’t seen in a long while).  I wonder what’s next from her…
