May’n – Chase the world October 6, 2012

Track Listing

  1. Chase the world
  2. Hikari
  3. Chase the world (without May’n)
  4. Hikari (without May’n)

1. Chase the world

I’m a sucker for electro/anison songs out there and May’n luckily started this era out with one.  Chase the world is energetic and very quick-paced as well which gives out a little more room for May’n to sing with because her voice sounds really nice here.  The twinkiling could be cut down a bit since it kind of sounds cheap.  Otherwise, this song is pretty good!

2. Hikari

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with Hikari, but unlike the A-side this is a little more dramatic and has more of a natural arrangement unlike the synth fest in the previous track.  I once again like May’n voice in the song and she sounds light and but strong too.  Not bad for a B-side but ultimately, I like “Chase the world” better.

After a break from “HEAT”, she came back with Chase the world which while it might not be the best in her repetoire, it’s passable and I enjoyed the electroness of it.  Hikari was also surprisingly good with pretty much the opposite style to the lead track…though I can see why it’s not an A-side as well.  Good single overall!

LiSA – crossing field

Filed under: LiSA — solarblade @ 2:27 pm

Track Listing

  1. crossing field
  2. Itsuka no Tegami
  3. KiSS me PARADOX (Regular/Limited only)
  4. Kanashimi Ao (Anime edition only)
  5. crossing field -TV ver.-
  6. crossing field -Instrumental-

1. crossing field

I really liked how this song really just started off strong and right off the bad, LiSA just blows in with this powerful voice that kind of reminds me of Nana Mizuki just without the crazy vibrato.  The tune itself isn’t really much originalty spun since it is an anison song of course.  I’m just really blown away more by LiSA’s vocal performance, she just came out strong and killed it good!  I really enjoyed this track!

2. Itsuka no Tegami

By the looks of the title, Itsuka no Tegami would’ve clearly been a ballad and I was right!  I kind of like the simplicity of the arrangement where it’s just the normal instrumentation you would find on one.  LiSA seemed to slightly toned it down, but the chorus comes in and she’s pulling those strong vocals out again and I’m kind of enjoying it.  However, those ~la la la’s~ are kind of strange >.<.  A little plain, but it’s not bad.

3. KiSS me PARADOX

Going into the split edition songs, KiSS me PARADOX comes first and this song has more of a pop/rock feel (like Shokotan’s recent stuff).  This is a little more happier though.  I’m not too excited about this one since it kind of is bland and LiSA doesn’t really seem to fit this style as much as the previous two tracks.

4. Kanashimi Ao

On the anime cut of the single, Kanashimi Ao definitely has anison written all over it but it isn’t as powerful as “crossing field” was.  Though I do love the effort LiSA is putting in this track because her strong vocals come through once again.  A little more blandness came through, but this song isn’t bad, just typical.

Only her second single and she already has an album and mini out prior?  Lord…LiSA is actually quite a strong vocalist and she has a lot of potential for future awesomeness, but right now she’s definitely catering to the anime world.  crossing field is really awesome and shows how powerful and exciting she can be.  The rest of the single doesn’t quite reach that level unfortunately.  Itsuka no Tegami is a good ballad, standard but good..actually the other two tracks can be compared to being standard but good.  I just hope she becomes a lot better in due time!

Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku – Karikeiyaku no Cinderella

Filed under: Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku — solarblade @ 1:52 pm

Track Listing

  1. Karikeiyaku no Cinderella
  2. Houkago Getobako Rock ‘n’ Roll MX
  3. Kekka Alright (Regular only)
  4. Agero! Ebifly (Limited A only)
  5. Utae! Odore! Ebiidada (Limited B only)
  6. Karikeiyaku no Cinderella (Less Vocal)
  7. Houkago Getobako Rock ‘n’ Roll MX (Less Vocal)
  8. Kekka Alright (Less Vocal)
  9. Agero! Ebifly (Less Vocal)
  10. Utae! Odore! Ebiidada! (Less Vocal)

1. Karikeiyaku no Cinderella

I was curious to what I was getting into with Ebichu and Karikeiyaku no Cinderella is kind of cute in a way hahah.  It doesn’t seem to be really random like the PV might be and the covers too but this is kind of interesting for a debut.  What I’m noticing though is that their called the sister group for Momoiro Clover Z but I don’t exactly see it quite yet.  Though the groups has weak singers I can tell, but they also have some surprisingly good ones too.  For a debut, the song is pretty good, but standard fare for me.

2. Houkago Getobako Rock ‘n’ Roll MX

Interesting that the main B-side from all editions begin with a pretty slow piano solo before everything kicks and the song gets all hardcore and loud (something that BABYMETAL fans could enjoy oddly enough).  NOW I SEE where the MomocloZ comparisons come in.  For such a heavy song, Houkago Getobako is wild and all over the place and there is some interesting vocals here (especially the deeper and higher ones).  The chorus is awesome though…catchy and melodic too!  Though it throws a wrench with one of the girls singing solo with the paino…before it goes back into the chorus…yeah this is awesome!

3. Kekka Alright!

On the regular editions, Kekka Alright comes next and this oddly fits after “Houkago Getobako” since it has guitars in it as well, but this cakes on the weird just a little more.  Solo lines abound which is hard for me at the moment since I’m still new to the group and all.  It’s kind of creepy though..(not at the level of “Oh My Ghost?” but it has that Halloween kind of feel to it, just not as much.

4. Agero! Ebifly

LE A goes into more of the typical brassy idol sound for Agero! Ebifly which is kind of nice after going through two rock tracks.  This is kind of fun and bright and something I would expect every idol group to do.  The chorus though is a hawt mess though…it just sounds too mushy and crammed together that it just doesn’t work for them here…the verses though is what keeps the song afloat and all the girls seem to be having a lot of fun with this even if the chorus is just bad.

5. Utae! Odore! Ebiidada!

I like that intro for the final song from the LE B of the single.  This goes into more of an electro style and it’s got a good riff to it and the verses are catchy to listen to.  Though some of the girls shouldn’t be singing (then again some of them don’t seem to be singing >.>).  It’s not as intriguing, but it’s lies in the middle of the single.

As it’s the group’s debut under DefSTAR, Karikeiyaku no Cinderella is kind of that safe zone single to test waters out and it looks like it did them good on ORICON.  The single itself is OK, nothing totally amazing (except Houkago Getobako because that was friggin amazing).  The rest of the songs seem to cater to the normal side of things with Karikeiyaku, Kekka Alright, and Utae! Odore! Ebiidada! being good but like I said rather safe.  Agero! Ebifly though is something I just couldn’t enjoy…that chorus was just not cool and a mess for the group…I’m looking forward to reviewing their next single now hahaha.

SHOW – MAGIC

Filed under: SHOW — solarblade @ 1:15 pm

Track Listing

  1. MAGIC
  2. GOING DOWN
  3. MAGIC (Instrumental)
  4. GOING DOWN (Instrumental)

1. MAGIC

After, “DANTE” what could SHOW could possibly come up next with.  Well with MAGIC, the song doesn’t really seem to be as energetic as his debut and seems to pull more of that sentimental card.  I really feel like this song is pretty cookie-cutter of a song and it just doesn’t seem to pull me in.  Though the English was pretty cute to hear…it might slowly grow on me, but at the moment it’s kind of cheesy and bleh of a song…kind of reminds of “Hero” though too….ehhhh.

2. GOING DOWN

Is things mixed up on this single?  I’m finding myself catering towards GOING DOWN because it’s energetic and the beat is infectious and just awesome to listen to.  SHOW’s vocals sounds a little more intriguing as well and has a lot more power behind it than in “MAGIC”.  I have to say this song trumps the A-side ten-fold!

As the second and final single before his Japanese debut, MAGIC is a lot like “DANTE” but backwards.  The leading track is light and poppy, but I don’t really feel much for it at the moment since it didn’t click with me well.  GOING DOWN however got me dancin’ pretty damn quickly and I was impressed (I even think this surpasses “DANTE” even)….shame it’s not on the album though T.T  Good single, but same level as his debut.

ClariS – Luminous

Filed under: ClariS — solarblade @ 1:03 pm

Track Listing

  1. Luminous
  2. Friends
  3. blossom
  4. Luminous -movie MIX- (Anime edition only)
  5. Connect -Orchestra ver.- (short EDIT) (Anime edition only)
  6. Luminous -instrumental-

1. Luminous

I was kind of expecting from that cute art cover that Luminous would be a bright song from ClariS, but I also find myself surprised of hearing the piano taking the prime sound next to the strings and synths.  I’m also starting to notice that I’m really liking the deeper voice much more than the other gal so it’s nice I could differentiate the vocals a little bit more here.  I kind of enjoyed this song a tad more than “Wake Up” actually…it’s got charm and both Alice and Clara sound good.

2. Friends

Keeping with the natural arrangement, Friends kind of takes up as the cheesier “Luminous” because they could really go hand in hand in arrangement and there really wouldn’t be much of a difference (at least to me),  This is a bit more slower though so that would be the biggest difference between the two, and the lyrics too lol.  I really don’t find it very memorable and easily could’ve been on “BIRTHDAY” really.

3. blossom

I guess it could explain why I was more excited with blossom because this was heavily synthesized and a bit more energetic than both the previous tracks.  Does remind me of “Wake Up” but this is cute and oddly catchy to listen to.  It’s probably my favorite B-sode from the duo yet (granted with all the B-sides they have it’s saying something).

4. Connect -Orchestra ver.- (short EDIT)

Assuming that in the future we’ll get a full one, the last track after the shortened up version of “Luminous” is a new version of “Connect” (their 2nd single).  At about a minute and a half, Connect did get the props for trying an orchestra version, but for such an upbeat track, Connect at first sounded strange to my ears but once the verse started…it worked and the second run through the chrous sounds pretty good too.  OK, I know a long version is needed now lol

I feel like ClariS is starting to enter slump mode with their singles.  “Wake Up” has the two B-sides that were too similar and now we have Luminous and Friends mirroring each other almost and it just doesn’t impress me.  At least the A-side isn’t boring.  Though what makes this single work better is the other songs because blossom was upbeat and catchy all over and the new version of Connect was just pretty to listen to.  I guess they’re doing something right…let’s just hope it keeps going on their next single.
