Aya Hirano – TOxxxIC March 3, 2013

Track Listing

  1. TOxxxIC
  2. Mirai Voyager
  3. Mirai Voyager -Aya Ver.-
  4. TOxxxIC -Instrumental-
  5. Mirai Voyager -Instrumental-

1. TOxxxIC

I was wondering where Aya went off to after “FRAGMENTS” and she cme back with TOxxxIC and I wasn’t expecting the song to be so dance-pop friendly almost American in a way (then again she did work with Steve Diamond, who has worked with Britney Spears and etc.).  She sounds good but the way she says ~toxic~ does bother me a bit.  Still this is kind of new footprints in the sand and I kind of liked how this song turned out overall.

2. Mirai Voyager

I was curious to why there was two versions of Mirai Voyager on the single but listening to this it seems like this version SCREAMS VOCALOID.  You can easily tell by the computerized vocals and high pitch that’s present that it’s Aya in VOCALOID form and this just kind of sucks to me.

3. Mirai Voyager -Aya Ver.-

Thank god this came after.  It’s the same song of course but instead of high squeaks and annoyances, it’s Aya…pure AYA!!!  I love her deeper vocals of course and it suits the rockin’ arrangement quite perfectly for me.  Then again Aya is pretty comfortable doing these songs since it’s kind of her main thing lol.  The song isn’t totally bad and I kind of wish this was promoted as an A-side as well.

What a strange single this was! TOxxxIC has a great arrangement and her voice suited it but there were some nuances that irked me but overall the song was great.  If you’re going to listen to Mirai Voyager PLEASE listen to the Aya Version first because that is the better one than the original VOCALOID mess there.  Nice to see Aya still releasing though lol.

KOKIA – Battle of destiny

1. Battle of destiny

When I heard that this song was tied to Dragon’s Nest, I was SO DAMN happy because the last song she did for the series “Road to Glory” was bloody amazing and I can see the similarities between that and Battle of destiny because this is the epic KOKIA I’ve really wanted all last year but ended up getting a lot of bland!  This song is really awesome and the fact I think KOKIA is singing in a different language is clearly proof of how amazing she really is…until…

2. Aete Ureshii Nyan

We move into the B-side which is a TOTAL 180 from the epicness of “Battle of destiny” because up to this point of my enjoyment of KOKIA I’ve never heard her voice sound so high and cutesy doing this nyan thing…DAMNIT STOP FOLLOWING MOMOKO!!!  I really would love to know why she did a song like this because I can’t think of any other way at the moment…this is just a bit too absurd.

KOKIA is once again on a release streak for some reason but the album that’s coming out doesn’t have ANY of the singles she’s done since “Sakura no Ki no Shita” so it’s weird to me.  Battle of destiny is a pretty amazing track and definitely is a great track to be from the same series as “Road to Glory” was.  Aete Ureshii Nyan however…gross and really not the type of thing KOKIA should do more often….blech!  I wonder what “Kioku no Hikari” will turn out like now…

Konomi Suzuki – Yume no Tsuzuki

  2. Shuujin -Paradox 2013-
  3. Yume no Tsuzuki (Instrumental)
  4. Shuujin -Paradox 2013- (Instrumental)

1. Yume no Tsuzuki

So Konomi is once again going for the cuter side of the anison world with Yume no Tsuzuki.  At least this song really lets Konomi show off her vocal skills and I’m quite impressed with what I hear from her.  Besides the good vocals and nice melody, the arrangement is your typical anison breezy cute song with strings and such…Not bad, but kind of ehhhh.

2. Shuujin -Paradox 2013-

So the B-side it seems is a ballad at first but becomes this dramatic almost goth like song like “CHOIR JAIL” and I’m happy that Konomi did slightly go back towards that sound because her voice REALLY suits a more edgier and heavy song…especially the high notes she hits!  Then the chorus hits and it comes disappointing since it’s not exciting and meh to me but the rest of the song is too cool!

Konomi’s 3rd single and she kind of fixed the problems that were oh so relevant in “DAYS of DASH”.  Neither songs were terrible but they still leave little of an impression on me besides the fact that Konomi can really sing!  I just wish she got some awesome producers to back her up, because this is not really working out for her.

JUJU – Dreamer

Track Listing

  1. Dreamer
  2. Beautiful
  3. Story -Live Ver.- (JUJU En @ Nippon Budokan)
  4. Yasashisa de Afureru You ni -Live Ver.- (JUJU En @ Nippon Budokan)

1. Dreamer

THANK YOU! JUJU didn’t make this song a ballad this time around with Dreamer.  It’s actually a little bit ballad-y but it has an upbeat kind of beat to it that prevents it from being like her last couple of A-sides!  When I listen to this I get nostalgic vibes because of the arrangement and JUJU’s vocals…it just sounds like something from the early 2000’s.  It’s a pretty good song, still not at the awesomeness that “Sayonara no Kawari ni” is but this is much better than stuff she’s been releasing recently.

2. Beautiful

At first I didn’t recognize this because of the Western twang it has, but this is a Christina Aguilera cover and that’s a pretty risky thing to cover (especially a song like Beautiful which is an emotional  trip).  JUJU sounds great and all, but she just doesn’t bring the emotions like Xtina does unfortunately.  Not a bad try though JUJU but nothing could ever defeat the original IMO.

3. Story -Live Ver.- (JUJU En @ Nippon Budokan)

I was surprised that the next track is an AI cover and sung live which kind of impressed me.  I definitely know AI has signature vocals (like Xtina) but JUJU does sound better than her here which doesn’t totally surprise me heh.  It’s a pleasant song overall and I think she did justice here.

4. Yasashisa de Afureru You ni -Live Ver.- (JUJU En @ Nippon Budokan)

The other live version is actually is of JUJU’s 9th A-side, and this kind of reminds me of a slower “Dreamer” but with more electric guitar present hahah.  Now this is the kind of ballad JUJU should do more of because it sounds powerful and it has a lot of direction going on.  Even though this is just a live version so the original could be slow as molasses…still I enjoyed this live version!

I’m happy that JUJU slightly changed it up for Dreamer by not giving us a ballad and going for more of something mid-tempo.  I really appreciate that and broke the monotony of her music after such a LONG stretch of ballad A-sides.  Her cover of Beautiful isn’t bad or anything, it just didn’t have the emotional mark that Xtina flawlessly pulled off.  The live versions were a nice touch too and she really sounds great in both of them.  I wonder if an album is coming up now…

Dream5 – COME ON!/Doremifa Sorairo

Track Listing

  1. COME ON!
  2. Doremifa Sorairo
  3. Believe
  4. COME ON! (Original Karaoke)
  5. Doremifa Sorairo (Original Karaoke)
  6. Believe (Original Karaoke)

1. COME ON!

I was kind of worried getting into Dream5’s next single because it was once again another tie-in to the Tamagotchi anime so I was expecting the song to be more cutesy like “Like & Peace!” but it’s actually not too bad for an idol song.  Plus it’s got a pretty cool dance arrangement behind giving it so it really does stand out.  They just keep getting better with every A-side and this is definitely their best one yet!

2. Doremifa Sorairo

The alternate covers that represent the second A-side is really scary but it suits the song as it’s the more cheerful and overly joyous idol track with chanting and a MUCH CUTER arrangement which is so weird to know that Akira is a part of this xD.  This track just kind of grosses me out a bit…just a little too cheesy for me.

3. Believe

The B-side to the single is different since we’re hearing some electric guitars and some really good vocals here (even though I’m not sure who’s who amongst the girls).  In Dream5 terms this is pretty aggressive and heavy which is pretty damn awesome to hear.  Minus the cutesy xylophone??, this is a great song and is the group’s best B-side to date too!

6 singles huh?  I kind of wish Dream5 would just release an album already just to complete this era because it’s starting to get single heavy.  Anyways the single at hand, COME ON! is their best one yet but kind held back a little.  COME ON! and Believe are really great tracks and shows the group’s improvement on all sides so they really surprised me with that.  HOWEVER, Doremifa Sorairo is giant step back for them…it’s like going back to their first mini-album which is mostly kiddy stuff but this song was just gross for me…if they had not made that song an A-side I’d be be better, but nope this was a bigger song than Believe was >.>
