1. Wake up!
I was wondering what AAA would do for their next single and well…the song is another tie-in to the anime, One Piece. So knowing that, I came in with the feeling the song is going to be a positive and uplifting summer ditty and it’s exactly what is! I’m not sure what to think but it really does sound a lot like their previous summer songs so this to me doesn’t do too much justice for them. At least the energy is there and the group is sounding fine together. Hidaka’s part though as usual seems out of place, but whatever.
2. Kaze ni Kaoru Natsu no Kioku
The B-side of the single, Kaze ni Kaoru Natsu no Kioku takes the lighter route as the ballad summer song that opens with both Misako and Chiaki. After the first set of verses, the tune gets a beat alongside the instrumentation so it becomes a bit of a mid-tempo dance tune. It’s weird though when Hidaka comes in because he kind of sings and it’s not terrible, but still nasally. I would’ve preferred this as the leading song over “Wake up!” by a big margin to be honest.
3. We Are!
The we come to the CD only release and not only I’m surprised it’s not a remix, but they rehashed a song for this release. This song is originally from their album “777 ~TRIPLE SEVEN~” so seeing this 2 albums later on this single feels really weird and kind of a copout (despite the One Piece themed single motif). By itself, it’s kind of how I feel for “Wake up!” where the tune is a bit typical but the feel of the song is energetic. Overall, eh…
I have no idea what AAA is up these days since “Love” came out, it’s like their decisions seem lazy and kind of lackluster. Wake up! doresn’t do much for me. The leading track and We Are! are kind of forgettable songs but works more for the anime it’s representing (even though the latter is just a cover). The only remote thing I enjoyed was Kaze ni Kaoru Natsu no Kioku and honestly, I wished it was it’s own single and just left this for being only One Piece songs. What is avex thinking?
