1. OVERTURE OVERSEA

Opening this mini-album, we have an introductory track!  I really do like that it opens like some traditional Japanese folk track, but it sounds like it could lead into a battle or something.  It is a bit random to say the least considering the trio are heavier as a unit in sound.  Interesting way to kick the album off…

2. Nippon Manju

As majority of the release is older releases, it’s no shock that the first full track is LADYBABY’s debut song!  As I said. LADYBABY is quite well-known for their mesh of metal and idol pop so Nippon Manju is a prime example of the general style they were going.  Both Rei and Rie sound cute and had a lot of shouting, but the focus was purely placed on Ladybeard who is quite aggressive and a bit scary with his death growls and power in his vocals.  I do like the song a lot (it’s what got me to review them in the first place) and a good song to really get this album going.

3. Renge Chance!

Then we move into their 3rd single (and last before this release), Renge Chance! was a strange A-side to have come out due to its strange lyrics (although their songs have been odd lyrically as it is).  Of the three A-sides though, Renge Chance! seems to be the heaviest of them with the emphasis on the metal arrangement.  Though stripping that back, it does come off a bit like the previous track with the two girls yelling lyrics and Ladybeard doing his death growls.  I was surprised by the short pre-chorus as it changes to a ballad for a couple seconds.  Like I said, it’s unique, but it does fit the sound LADYBABY were going for.

4. C’est si bon Kibun

The next 3 tracks were actually B-sides to their three singles they released!  This one, from “Renge Chance!” was definitely the more interesting of the two tracks as it focused a little more of the idol side of things and the two girls aren’t yelling out their lyrics.  Ladybeard does have his moments to say the least, but I actually liked Rie/Rei a bit more from their performance here.  Pretty decent B-side overall!

5. ULTRALUCKY

Then we move to the B-side from their debut and I remembered this one due to Ladybeard actually singing with the girls.  For once it felt like a cohesive unit (and slightly less of a gimmick of a group).  It definitely is the poppiest of the songs here, but it stuck out on ONE YEAR BEST as the idol track that brought the group into a cohesive unit (even if Ladybeard himself was a little strange singing).

6. Beard-chan Robot

Then we get into the B-side from “Age-Age Money” and it’s back to the more darker and edgier atmosphere.  Actually it is the darkest of the tracks which favors more for Ladybeard as he takes a lot of the lines and the chorus (while lighter than majority of the song).  I actually dug the song being more metal than what I was expecting, but didn’t have the catchy factor than most of their songs do.

7. SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS

We did get ONE actual new track in this release (despite them having a lot more unreleased stuff >.>).  It does start of nice and sweet with Rei & Rie with a lighthearted arrangement, but then the song switches gears and Ladybeard fires away with his normal shtick.  The song’s arrangement isn’t quite as metal as one might hope and actually makes me think of Red Hot Chili Peppers for some strange reason.  It’s an OK song, but there could be much more to it.

8. Age-Age Money ~Ochingin Daisakusen~

Ending the album is the group’s second A-side funny enough.  I do think it may be the group’s best single as it has the best of both worlds and just is a memorable song since it took “Nippon Manju” and amped it up by quite a margin from catchy Ladybeard parts and both Rei & Rie sounds so much more confident!  It’s a very decent way to close the album!

Huh?  A best-of mini-album of just a span of a year?  That’s a bit absurd in normal standards but there’s a reason why this is coming out and that’s because Ladybeard is leaving the group (focusing on other things).  Since the lifeblood and sheer reason why LADYBABY grew a fanbase as fast as it did was because of the gimmick that there were a two-girl unit with a bulky male screamer.  Now with the screamer gone, I’m not sure where the girls will end up, though currently they’re going by “The artist formerly known as LADYBABY”…hopefully that’s a temporary name…As for the album?  It’s a good collection of their songs so far, but maybe a bit unusual to release this…
