itazurataiyou

Track Listing

  1. Itazura Taiyou
  2. Happy New World☆
  3. Dream☆Land (CD only)
  4. Itazura Taiyou (Instrumental)
  5. Happy New World☆ (Instrumental)
  6. Dream☆Land (Instrumental)

1. Itazura Taiyou

The A-side that opens the single is quite interesting as it sounds like a mix of idol/anison (which is the basis of the group, mind you).  Itazura Taiyou sounds like a song that was made early in the 2000’s.  There’s just something that makes it sound unique and fresh amongst the other A-sides they’ve released.  The members do tend to scream this song which might be a turnoff for some people, but I kind of thought it was a nice touch.  Pretty memorable song.

2. Happy New World☆

The first B-side, Happy New World☆ though takes the generic anison route which is not good because it feels like I’ve heard this kind of song way too many times!  The voices are more cuter (or the higher pitched members took lead here).  I don’t know, but this song didn’t do much of anything for me.  Might as well have stuck to their previous single.

3. Dream☆Land

As usual, the group includes an extra track on CD onlys though I can’t tell if this is a cover song or not, but I’ll assume it is as their last three singles have been exactly like this.  It’s a lot like “Happy New World☆” with the cutesy anison vibe which is pretty meh to me so this didn’t do much in the run either LOL.

On i☆ris’ 5th single, I was quite disappointed for the most part.  It’s surprising that the group has to be on their 5th (announced 6th) single before their debut album.  The leading track is pretty good though and a good nostalgic trip and all the vocalists sound pretty good!  Though both B-sides are quite generic for the group and neither stood out to me overall…(maybe those *hoshis* are the reason >.>).  I just want an album from them now.

i☆Ris – WONDERLAND February 19, 2014

wonderland

Track Listing

  1. Fantasia WONDERLAND
  2. Last Moment
  3. EDGE OF HEAVEN
  4. Moshimo Mainichi ga Christmas Nattara (Type C only)
  5. Fantasia WONDERLAND (Instrumental)
  6. Last Moment (Instrumental)
  7. EDGE OF HEAVEN (Instrumental)
  8. Moshimo Mainichi ga Christmas Nattara (Instrumental)

1. Fantasia WONDERLAND

Whoa, could they get any cuter?  Fantasia WONDERLAND seems so different though like the song takes you on this cute adventure, especially with the intro.  Once the group comes in, the song is basically idol cute but has some acoustic guitar and jingle bells lol.  It’s a strange song to listen to since it swerves between a peppy song and an ethereal tune.  It’s something different, but the voices might push people away…overall it’s solid and I can get behind it lol.

2. Last Moment

It seems like the single’s B-sides are solos!  This is sung by Yuki Wakai (the member in red) and her song is a ballad.  It seems like Yuki is the member that I’ve grown to really like because she has the deeper voice and here she gave a pretty good vocal performance behind a rather typical arrangement.  She’s definitely got a pretty strong voice and I hope she continues to impress!

3. EDGE OF HEAVEN

The other B-side, EDGE OF HEAVEN is sung solo by Azuki Shibuya (the yellow member).  Surprise, surprise that it’s another ballad on the single.  I wasn’t surprised, but I was more with the fact that she’s another good singer in the group as she’s also singing in a deeper voice which actually sounds slightly better than Yuki’s.  Though the song kind of misses the mark because it becomes a rock ballad, but the guitars sound so wrong here, almost fake in a way.  It’s OK, but god the arrangement is meh.

4. Moshimo Mainichi ga Christmas Nattara

Of course their Type C edition is a cover, this time covering Scanch’s final single that came out in 1995.  I listened to the original and I was OK with it even though it was 90’s J-rock.  i☆Ris’ cover is of course a bit more jolly and Christmas-y.  It’s sounds so much that it does come off a bit generic as it just kind of doesn’t stand out (minus the horn solos) but it’s still kind of meh overall.

As the group’s 4th single, WONDERLAND is a slight improvement over their last single but not much.  The leading track is different and they actually did cute right with this one.  The solo B-sides were good for both Yuki and Azuki but I preferred Last Moment more than EDGE OF HEAVEN.  Their Scanch cover is very plain and generic and is the weakest cover they’ve done yet.  I wonder if an album is next 0.o

i☆Ris – §Rainbow February 18, 2014

rainbow

Track Listing

  1. §Rainbow
  2. Susume Adventure
  3. Motteke! Sailor Fuku (Type C only)
  4. §Rainbow (Instrumental)
  5. Susume Adventure (Instrumental)
  6. Motteke! Sailor Fuku (Instrumental)

1. §Rainbow

I was kind of hoping the group would continue to sound like they did from “Ichizu” but with §Rainbow we’re back to more of the cutesy sound and sadly the girls didn’t seem quite as together as well.  Like the more mature voices mixing with the more idol-cute voices didn’t gel very well.  Didn’t help the song sounded generic overall.  I was quite disappointed with this song.

2. Susume Adventure

The B-side begins with some clapping and some layering of the group’s voices.  It definitely sounds like a song made for lives because in the studio, the ~YEAH~ sound really unlively lol.  There’s something about the song that’s also lacking in some power, but I know this track would be awesome to hear live, it’s just weak in studio form.

3. Motteke! Sailor Fuku

The cover they brought this time is a song that’s a bit more recent, a 2007 anime theme that got pretty big back in the day.  For a cover, they didn’t do so bad, but it’s definitely super cutesy here, but it’s pretty WTF so it kind of works for them.  I actually thought it was pretty catchy and see why this song was so popular.

3rd single in and §Rainbow brought the group back down again.  The main track just was plain and really didn’t do anything memorable for the group.  Susume Adventure is a song that’s more meant for lives more than anything else an its studio version felt empty to me.  Motteke! Sailor Fuku though was oddly the best the single had to offer, though it’s not much…I hope they pick it up in the next single!

i☆Ris – Ichizu

ichizu

Track Listing

  1. Ichizu
  2. i☆Doloid
  3. Get Over (Type C only)
  4. Ichizu -Instrumental-
  5. i☆Doloid -Instrumental-
  6. Get Over -Instrumental-

1. Ichizu

For the group’s 2nd A-side, I was kind of surprised the tone of the group switched from generic idol song to Ichizu which sounds like something from the early 2000’s avex capsule.  It’s a mid-tempo song and I think there’s just one lead here, but the song is a total departure after “Color” and I quite enjoyed the change!

2. i☆Doloid

Is this supposed to be a play on VOCALOID?  Makes sense because this song is heavy on synths and all that, but the vocals aren’t tampered with.  Actually the song sounds VERY idol-like and if it wasn’t for the cutesy synths, it would’ve been amazingly generic.  Whoever got the solo lines though sounded nice but overall this song was kind of meh.

3. Get Over

i☆Ris started a thing that we would see from this single out by making Type C editions come with a cover song.  The first is a surprise as it’s a single I covered long ago.  It’s dream’s 2001 single, Get Over.  I instantly remembered the song right from the intro, though it surprises me because the voices in the song sound so much better and deeper than in the previous track.  The cover is a bit more up to date, though it seems like all the ladies got lines (but I can’t be sure because it sounds like only two of the members sung).

After a cover album, i☆Ris came back with Ichizu and it’s a switch from their previous single, “Color” with the sound of the songs almost taking up a slight early avex sound.  Get Over also fits in the category and honestly, it was a pretty solid cover and I hope they could sing like this more often.  Howerver, the only song that didn’t fit was i☆Doloid because it was so sugary and cutesy and was a total antithesis for the single lol.

i☆Ris – Color November 25, 2012

Track Listing

  1. Color
  2. Ramune Sunset
  3. Color (Instrumental)
  4. Ramune Sunset (Instrumental)

1. Color

As avex’s new idol group, i☆Ris kicks their career off together with Color which is quite synth heavy and also idol-like so it’s kind of like their other idol groups on the same label.  I will say it’s quite tame and to-the-books which is a bit unfortunate, but I guess it’s a good song to cheer you up, I just wish the song had some solo lines to at least give us a bit to learn the girls voices at least >.<

2. Ramune Sunset

The coupling song for the single is sadly a bit more generic idol music which disappoints me as well a the fact that the girls are singing altogether which makes it even more meh.  It’s a bit slower as well so it kind of shows the girls ability to sing together better.  It’s not much better but it’s a step above “Color”.

As it’s avex’s new “anison idol” group, i☆Ris right now isn’t impressing me very much like how TOKYO GIRLS’ STYLE, SUPER☆GiRLS, and even Fairies have before.  It just seems that they started off on the lowest foot possible with Color and both tracks really don’t impress me very much.  Maybe they’ll grow on me in the future, but for right now…this is kind of bleh.
