1. BAAM -Japanese ver.-

Not even a couple seconds in and I already knew the group was going to cash in on the explosive popularity that “BBoom BBoom” had for them earlier in 2018.  The song is VERY VERY similar to previously mentioned track from the beats to the prechorus from Yeonwoo to the rap verse from JooE & Daisy.  It’s just scary that it’s essentially a retread of their big hit.  That said, the song is still pretty damn good and is just as much an earworm!  So I suppose the idea was that if it’s not broken don’t fix for this A-side.  I will say also that I think I prefer the Japanese cut of the Korean original, must be taste I guess.

2. Only one you -Japanese ver.-

So the B-side actually comes from the same mini-album that “BAAM” did in Korea so I suppose it was another track that stood out from it perhaps?  Though this one chills things out after the party banger, “BAAM” for this rather cute pop track.  Like the B-side from their last single, this is kind of the song I would’ve expected MOMOLAND to release over and over.  I do enjoy the vocals here and everyone sounds airy and pretty.  Just gives me a 90’s pop love song so that’s quite nice.

I knew I was right when “BAAM” was chosen as their second single in Japan and just as much I feel exactly the same with this single as I did with “BBoom BBoom”.  The main track is pretty good even if its by the books a clone of the aforementioned track while Only one you was a cute pop song.  I hope MOMOLAND for their 3rd single changes the game up because having both A-side side-by-side is really make them feel like a one trick pony when I know there’s so much more to them!

MOMOLAND – BBoom BBoom July 22, 2018

Oi, this song really got huge this year in Korea didn’t it?  Figured that we’d eventually get to see this make it into Japan into its own version and considering this is MOMOLAND’s debut single for the Land of the Rising Sun, I was curious to see if it was just as awesome and YUP!  This song is just amazing to me and hearing the group tackle the song in a different is of course impressive.  The only noticeable things beyond the language transition is the group adding ~GREAT!~ in the opening/after chorus (which while surprising, makes sense as they had started doing that in their Korean performances after a while).  Besides that, the song just is a bop and the saxophone melody to the rapping section with JooE & Daisy is just badass!  Easily one of my favorite K-pop songs this year and happy it’s in Japanese as well!

2. Welcome to MOMOLAND -Japanese ver.-

So the B-side of the single is actually from their first mini-album of the same name (not their debut song oddly enough, “Jjan! Koong! Kwang!”).  I’m curious to why it was chosen because unlike “BBoom BBoom”, this is more of the sparkly girly song that I would have assumed would be for other groups.  I will say the opening is damn cute with the spoken dialogue and then moving into this quirky, slightly throwback, and cute track with brighter vocals and more members involved (Daisy & Taeha weren’t in the group when this song originally came out).  It reminds me of early Girls’ Generation and KARA for some reason.  It’s cute, but definitely is a B-side for me.

MOMOLAND finally debuts in Japan (well they did a Korean best for Japan, but I don’t count those as debuts to be honest).  Anyways due to the popularity that BBoom BBoom got, it’s no surprise Japan would get this as well.  The song is just so fresh and full of nice saxophones and moments with all the members that really worked for them.  Though on the other side of the spectrum, we have Welcome to MOMOLAND which wasn’t originally a song they promoted for their debut so it was interesting to see 9-nin MOMOLAND give us a Japanese cut of it.  Overall, a good single, but I wonder what they’ll do next for Japan (lol, prolly a recut of “BAAM” if anything XD.
