1. Tommy’s Halloween Fairy tale (OPENING)

Ahhh, of course being Tomoko’s next holiday themed release (once again tackling Halloween), the introduction to this mini-album is pretty dark and sinister and quite fitting to certain past songs that Tomoko has done.  With a loud orchestral blast alongside some darker settings and a storm at the ending.  It does lead into our next track quite smoothly so this worked as an introduction.

2. LIVING DEAD DINER GIRLS

What’s different on this release is that february & heavenly have one solo to themselves and two songs where they’re technically together (considering it’s the same singer, it’s a bit strange right?).  Tackling heavenly’s solo track, it sounds like what we’ve come to known from Tomoko’s more punk rock-oriented side.  It’s a strong track and it reminds me of her songs of recent (a bit like “I’M YOUR DEVIL” actually) but it’s a solid track and Tomoko still sounds good even hitting these really cool areas.

3. The Sparkling Candy Man†

The first of the “duet” songs, The Sparkling Candy Man† actually takes up the holiday feel quite literally and it reminds me of something Willy Wonka with the whole setting and it doesn’t help that there’s a guy speaking behind Tomoko’s singing here so it’s really suiting the situation.  About Tomoko, her voice does sound a little more upbeat and girly like something february, which begs the question of where’s heavenly in this song because it’s credited to both.  When the guy takes up the front, he sounds like he’s having fun and sounds crazy and evil too lol!  It’s a totally bizarre song, but I’m quite invested in this and plays up Tomoko’s fascination of Halloween WAY better than the last time!, sorry “NEVER ENDING PARTY NIGHT”…

4. Follow the White Rabbit! (INSTRUMENTAL)

Following up the last track, the Willy Wonka-ish guy takes up the interlude by offering some candy while walking to a tea party, but things take a trippy road as the voice starts getting warped and strange while a clock ticking continues until it abruptly stops and our next track plays.

5. LITTLE RED FOREST

We enter february’s solo song and it definitely takes me back to that 80s vibe but has a cooler scary vibe which is an awesome change of pace.  Actually listening to this song, REALLY reminds me of stuff from her first two albums and I’ve missed this so much so I immediately started to love this song.  Even with the new tricks with the arrangement, it doesn’t make the song forgetful to me.  Where has she been hiding this because this is sooooo good!

6. Frozen Raspberry Snow

Ending the mini, it sounds like we’ve wrapped to Christmas for some reason and while this is another song credited to both monikers, this ballad is really interesting, but really pleasant for some reason.  Tomoko’s voice is actually under some heavy echo filters and sounds really old-fashioned while the arrangement keeps this nice joyful tone that kind of relaxes me.  It’s an interesting song in Tomoko’s arsenal and I kind of dug it!  Really cool!

Wow!  I was wondering if Tomoko just gave up after the whole mess that was “HALLOWEEN ADDICTION”, but with the albums she released after that, it gave me hope that she could still release quality songs and she did with flying colors with this Halloween mini-album (though Frozen Raspberry Kiss, is moreso a Christmas song than anything else).  Disregarding the intro and interlude, this is 4 awesome songs that Tomoko pulled off and really made me fall in love again…definitely *RECOMMENDED*

Tommy february6 – TOMMY CANDY SHOP ♥ SUGAR ♥ ME June 22, 2013

Track Listing

  1. FAIRY DUST
  2. SUGAR♥ME
  3. RUNAWAY
  4. ANGEL FADE
  5. SPACEY COWGIRL
  6. PINK ARMY
  7. Ai no♥Ai no Hoshi
  8. MY VACATION
  9. SUMMER BUBBLES
  10. BE MY VALENTINE

1. FAIRY DUST

Opening the album, Tomoko kicks things with FAIRY DUST and by that title, it was definitely going back to being a really cute song, but in february6’s way it’s quite true to her style!  I also like the fact that I’m hearing a lot of English from Tomoko as well, even if it’s heavily accented lol.  This is quite catchy and the chorus is quite amazing to listen as well…what a great way to start things off!

2. SUGAR♥ME

As one of the two tracks promoting the album, SUGAR♥ME actually sounds like a song she would’ve put out during the “Tommy airline*” days because of it’s retro pop feel of it.  I really did miss this side of Tomoko’s music in this persona because she was going for a more modern sound.  This song is pretty catchy too OMG…very nice of a track.

3. RUNAWAY

As the other promotional track used for the album, RUNAWAY also shares some of the old february6 tracks as well.  I do think this song also reminds me of a synthed up heavenly6 track because of the lyrics seem to a be a slight bit darker.  I have to say my favorite parts are the pre-chorus sections because it’s such a nice build-up.  Damn…I’m loving this album so far!

4. ANGEL FADE

Is it me or does this song kind of feels like the song whose PV would look like “Bloomin'”s PV because of the whole dreamy tone of the song in the intro.  After that the song becomes a bit like electropop which is fine with me because I love the loud sound of the song and the way Tomoko’s voice is layered in the song.  I will say that she is kind of stressing her vocals out in the chorus because she has to be louder than the music.  It’s definitely a song that’s great for dancing in clubs to.

5. SPACEY COWGIRL

Of the songs on the album, I think my favorite has to be SPACEY COWGIRL because it’s retro but it’s also aggressive in its own right which really stands out on the album.  I’ve started to take notice that Tomoko has been singing in English for almost half the album now and I’m not sure how to take it lol.  SPACEY COWGIRL just has a great tone to it and the chorus is just orgasmic to my ears lol.  Yeah this is just an epic song for Tomoko!

6. PINK ARMY

Getting into PINK ARMY, I kind of felt this song was slightly going into K-pop territory because of the edgier sound and bump-and-grind style that we ended up with here.  I found this quite refreshing, but like “ANGEL FADE” she’s struggling in the chorus because of singing in a higher range.  I kind of enjoyed the song, but there were definitely better tracks to be honest lol.

7. Ai no♥Ai no Hoshi

It’s a bit strange to see there’s only one track that isn’t capitalized on the album and it’s the B-side from “BE MY VALENTINE” which is also a self-cover of the same track done by her band, the brilliant green.  Like I said in the review, she did make it fit the persona quite nicely, but the fact she didn’t resing the song kind of makes it a little lazy and it’s kind of obvious her voice does sound a bit different than the other tracks.  Still, I can’t help but admire that she pulled this song (though surprised it made the album cut >.>).

8. MY VACATION

Why do I feel like this song sort of reminds me of a Katy Perry track (Teenage Dream that is).  I took this as the summer track from Tomoko because it’s so dance-poppy, but I love the melody and hearing Tommy singing in Japanese (something I didn’t really comment back on the last track LOL).  This song is just the right kind of summer fun and party music, I love to listen to so this was an epic win!

9. SUMMER BUBBLES

As the last new track, SUMMER BUBBLES actually give me the feel of her first album which I didn’t think she’d get herself back into.  Sadly, of the new tracks, this is probably my least favorite of them because it’s a bit too uneventful and kind of low-key for me.  I did like, the throwback to her first album though, that’s quite nice.

10. BE MY VALENTINE

Ending the album is the A-side that was released before the album and is also the longest track as well being 6 minutes in length.  This also kind of harkens her debut album but it also kind of reminds me of some of those singles she released after her second album.  Being a song that’s about Valentine’s is nice and Tomoko is know to do some good holiday-themed songs.  The only thing that bothered me is the spoken dialogue (spoken in Engrish) and it just is ridiculous (since the guys voice is just like the one used on the new track that was on “HALLOWEEN ADDICTION”).  Otherwise, nice track, but a little too long.

  • SUMMER BUBBLES

It’s been forever since Tomoko released a full studio album under the february6 moniker.  As this is her 3rd studio album, TOMMY CANDY SHOP ♥ SUGAR ♥ ME really surprised me because her last couple of releases have been kind of subpar and she was winning people more with her heavenly6 persona.  There was just a lot of great tracks on this album and even though there was two songs I was just kind of meh with, this is on par with her debut album with best works!  Yeah this album is definitely *RECOMMENDED* to Tommy fans!

Track Listing

  1. Be My Valentine
  2. Ai no♥Ai no Hoshi

1. Be My Valentine

OMG, it’s been so damn long since February last released an A-side and it seems like Tomoko and her producer have not lost the charm they had back in the days of her first album’s days.  Even though this is a holiday-specific song about Valentine’s, it’s still really impressive and I’m so happy to hear something reminiscent of the past and Tomoko sounds GREAT in the song!  She’s back everyone!

2. Ai no♥Ai no Hoshi

Like with many of the other Tommy feb singles, there’s a cover on here!  This time from her own band, the brilliant green!  From what I’ve though the song didn’t really go through much as in the vocals did not change from the original, just the arrangement.  That being said, this actually is kind of cool in a way.  Vocally I couldn’t tell from the current and the now Tomoko so this felt perfect.  This actually was a pretty cool cover overall!

How long has it been since her last single, 6 years?  Yeah it’s been that long people and with Be My Valentine, she hasn’t lost any footing in the way her music sounds (OK, there was “FEBRUARY” and the 2-ish minute track from “HALLOWEEN ADDICTION” and the song from her best album, but we got something that was just only hers lol.  I really liked the A-side as it brings those old memories of her first album back to light where as Ai no♥Ai no Hoshi stands as a pretty worthy cover, if a tad lazy that it wasn’t resung.  Can’t wait to see what’s in store now!

Tommy february6 / Tommy heavenly6 – HALLOWEEN ADDICTION October 20, 2012

Track Listing

  1. Never Ending Party Night
  2. Lollipop Candy♥BAD♥girl
  3. I’M YOUR DEVIL -Halloween Remix-

1. Never Ending Party Night

So we start this random release with the only new track. Never Ending Party Night.  I like how it starts out at a carnival (makes sense right?).  It’s stramge because we hear random people talking about rides and stuff before the night has to end and Tomoko sings a short passage (in Heavenly form).  Then a guy says something about landing on february and her song starts up.  Unlike the latter half of the track, february’s excerpt is pretty short but I REALLY liked this for some reason.  It’s groovy and still true to february’s style.  Though only being over 2 minutes, the song quickly moves into another little story section explaining this twin story that Tommy enjoys before ending it with ~you are now a part of the heavenly Halloween addiction nightmare….welcome~ and leading into heavenly’s track.  Now to me, heavenly’s song sounds like some of her non-Halloween tracks which is slightly disappointing because there’s not much of a hook for me to grasp.  That said, this part actually is not as good as feb’s.  Then we hit the ending and strangle enough the song ends at 11:04, breaking the 10:31 time she’s done in the next two tracks.

2. Lollipop Candy♥BAD♥girl

Continuing on, the first awesome Halloween track Tomoko did was Lollipop Candy♥BAD♥girl as her heavenly persona.  It’s hard to think that it started off with this slammin’ track.  Plus I really do think that this song is very true to Halloween (moreso than the other two tracks).  There’s just so much that I really loved about this song from the silly waltz sections and then the heavy rock to go alongside everything.  It just really tickled my fancy and still does today.  The best track of the three!

3. I’M YOUR DEVIL -Halloween Remix-

The last track on this release, I’M YOUR DEVIL is kind of strange for me still even if it’s about a year old.  I mean the intro with Tomoko speaking in a kind of poetic way was kind of ironic and strange.  The tea party section that she sings did start things off on a dark note which is good, but that’s really it since I’M YOUR DEVIL was initially its own song before the addition of Halloween.  I think it would’ve been better to have released an original Halloween song last year than just cake it on…but oh well.

She calls this a mini-album?  HALLOWEEN ADDICTION probably got the whole mini title because every song is over 10 minutes.  Now, I commend Tomoko for doing this because it fits the holiday and such but there’s some weird things.  The tracklist is the three songs but it’s segmented to each section of each track as it’s own track number which is probably the worst thing to do.  Overall, it’s ok….a little bit out of nowhere and kind of redundant when there’s just ONE new song….but whatever…

HALLOWEEN JUNKY ORCHESTRA – HALLOWEEN PARTY October 15, 2012

Track Listing

  1. HALLOWEEN PARTY
  2. Penalty Waltz

1. HALLOWEEN PARTY

Wow, what a cast of people chosen for this song!  I mean you have both members of VAMPS, Anna Tsuchiya, Kanon Wakeshima, Tomoko Kawase in both her solo monikers, yasu, DAIGO, KYO, Tatsurou, Aoki and various other musicians (which I’ll talk about in the next track).  This track is just dark and fitting for the occasion for sure.  A lot of different vocals and tones that it is messy but in the way that only Halloween would deem it perfectly fitting.  Now seeing as hyde has the most vocals, it was great hearing familiar voices as well like all of the above (especially the female singers).  The hook/chorus of the song eerily sounds like Tomoko’s own “Lollipop Candy♥BAD♥girl” but still this song is a great song and everyone that took part (even the secondary guys in the PV should get a pat on their back for this awesomeness).

2. Penalty Waltz

So for K.A.Z, Hitsugi, RINA, Aki, and whoever else plays instruments in the group, they get their own instrumental track and it’s a pretty interesting waltz.  It’s funny to see how it moves and then get interrupted by sounds of monsters breaking things and making sounds.  I mean it doesn’t stick as strong as “HALLOWEEN PARTY” did, but I guess it was to make up for the people that didn’t sing on the main track so I can understand why this is here.

Wow, HALLOWEEN JUNKY ORCHESTRA is a unique and quite awesome of a group filled with known stars in the rock field.  This single was pretty awesome and definitely is colorful and bizarre and just all kinds of random.  I think another song would’ve been a lot better than Penelty Waltz, but I understand why it’s there….I hope they can do something in the future and not be a one-time thing.

  7. I’M YOUR DEVIL HALLOWEEN REMIX

FEBRUARY side

1. HOT CHOCOLAT

Starting with FEBRUARY’s side, it’s been a long time since we’ve heard new material from her and HOT CHOCOLAT was actually a great song to come back to since it has this fun 80’s pop there and mixes in this gritty synth for the verses before letting it get all kinds of synthy in the chorus.  It’s really good and even though it’s the only song MALIBU CONVERTIBLE produces it stood out in this entire release…LOVE IT!

2. GIMME GIMME GIMME

At first it was thought that this was going to be an ABBA cover but it doesn’t seem so because the melody is different and Tomoko is singing purely in Japanese which doesn’t follow the melody.  When I heard this song, I kind of got this feeling that it’s trying to be nostalgic by sounding like stuff from her first album and a little of “je t’aime ★ je t’aime” almost.  Not bad and I can see she’s returned to her lazy style of singing to which was a shtick she’s stuck with as february.

3. I’M YOUR ANGEL

I’m so happy that this wasn’t just a feb. version of “I’M YOUR DEVIL” even though titles are opposites of one another.  I feel like I’ve heard this somewhere before almost like “Futari no Seaside” but less beach-y.  I do get vibes from her sophomore album here though.  Besides that I don’t remember this one much besides calling it the “Tommy airline*” song.

4. MY FUTURE BOY

Besides “HOT CHOCOLAT”, I think MY FUTURE BOY is my favorite off this disc.  I felt like her darker-tinged february songs were a lot more impressive and had a different feeling against the lyrics mixed with the arrangement.  I liked this song since it flowed nicely and Tomoko sounds rather good with the arrangement.  Good overall!

5. LAST SLOW DANCE

Then the next song kind of confused me just a little bit.  Since the song from her best-of, she’s been leaning towards using guitars in her music and while I thought this was moving february towards a more serious tone, I kind of have the notion that she doesn’t need this (because she has heavenly for that).  Though I do love that the song has this 80’s slow dance going since it reminds me of those proms in the movies and songs like this would play.  I thought that was cool.  As a song altogether, it’s a bit too slow but it does its job and Tomoko sounds nice.

6. GOOD NIGHT MY SWEET DAY

I love the bass riff out of this song for sure.  It’s an interesting song for me and I love various points of the song like the middle of the song where there’s a heavily filtered voice that takes over.  As I listened to the song it was an interesting song but it didn’t capture my attention as well as many of the other songs did.

7. I HOLD YOUR NIGHT

As we near the half point of the release, the final february song is another ballad from Tomoko and I’m surprised that it’s a little more natural than other ballads under this pseudonym.  I mean it’s still no “I’LL BE YOUR ANGEL” or anything but it manages to not be very offensive and she pulls off the ending feel quite nicely.  Kind of dramatic basically but it’s nice nonetheless.

HEAVENLY side

1. CALL ME PRINCESS

Moving to the heavenly side of things, we kick things off with CALL ME PRINCESS which actually feels like she’s going back to her earlier grungy side with pounding guitar chords and overall heavy sound.  I mean it does have a certain “I KILL MY HEART” vibe to it, but there’s something about it that sounds rather cleaner and darker but also a LOT better.  Not bad as the first song!

2. HATE YOUR LIES

Then we do get another dark-tinged song with HATE YOUR LIES but unlike having a “I KILL MY HEART” it sounds strong and metal and just in its own state of awesomeness.  I actually get shivers listening to this and there’s a couple of heavenly songs that do that like “PAPERMOON” and “Heavy Starry Chain”.  Those three share this attitude that I love and mixing with Tomoko’s great vocals…this was pretty epic.  My personal favorite off this side!

3. I’M YOUR DEVIL -SHORT-

I’m so happy they added the original take of I’M YOUR DEVIL on here because not many people were feeling the long version of the song and personally, I also wanted a short version too.  It’s still pretty much in your face and full of attitude and parts where Tomoko is speak-yelling.  I still love the song for the most part and it’s basically my second favorite after “HATE YOUR LIES”.  Still for a song that’s been out the longest, I’m happy she redeemed herself with this.

4. YOU HURT ME

I swear, YOU HURT ME sounds almost like a “PAPERMOON” clone because they have a similar pace and the chords kind of go hand in hand in some parts.  I will say that I found myself loving this song too for some reason.  I’m just loving the chords of this and it sounds a lot of effort went into the arrangement here.  It’s just damn good!

5. monochrome rainbow

I’m a bit surprised to see that monochrome rainbow make the list even though it was an A-side.  Meaning that the heavenly side does in fact have less new tracks than february’s.  Funny that on the album, I found this to be the weakest on heavenly’s side.  I’m not sure why but it doesn’t feel like enough effort was put here and I get memories of “Unlimited Sky” here as well.  I think it was better off as just an A-side.

6. DARK DARK SKY

As the last new song on the album, DARK DARK SKY also gave me a little bit of “Unlimited Sky” vibes but this is kind of creepy at the same time so it kind of harkens back to her first two albums moreso.  I kind of like the song’s atmosphere and her unenthusiastic way of singing the song stood out as well.  Pretty solid of a track but the other songs minus “monochrome rainbow” surpass it.

7. I’M YOUR DEVIL HALLOWEEN REMIX

I felt this was just unneeded to be on this release for sure.  I mean we already concluded that most people would prefer the short version than the extended (which if you haven’t noticed this version clocks in at 10:31…you know like the date of Halloween…like she’s done with “Lollipop Candy ♥BAD♥ girl”.  I even think it’s a bit too long winded.  If you like the humorous Engrish then you’ll be laughing through this but otherwise, I would stick to the short version.

  • GOOD NIGHT MY SWEET DAY

I’m going to talk bout the two sides then altogether.  FEBRUARY has been a long time coming and while we did get one new song between her last single and this release…I was expecting a lot.  I will say that it is a bit of a bummer but I think it’s because all the songs (minus HOT CHOCOLAT) was produced by one guy and that left me disappointed (then again HEAVENLY’s was done mostly by the same producer too).  I guess I was expecting a bit more from this but whatever…it was a release and it wasn’t THAT bad.

HOWEVER, HEAVENLY’s side surprised the hell out of me at how good it sounded and how back to form she really got.  I mean besides the lead-in single (which honestly shouldn’t been on here) all the songs were pretty good and kept that heavenly charm that I loved!

Altogether though, it’s actually a pretty likeable release but I’m sure many would’ve rather seen a full release from both sides rather than a joint release.  I can agree because I don’t think 7 songs for each was enough and HEAVENLY with literally only 4 new songs so I don’t know but this release was pretty impressive if only just the HEAVENLY side.

Tommy February6 – ♥Lonely in Gorgeous♥ September 3, 2008

Track Listing

  1. ♥Lonely in Gorgeous♥
  2. Is this feeling love?
  3. E-mail♥ more
  4. ♥Lonely in Gorgeous♥ (Original Karaoke)

1. ♥Lonely in Gorgeous♥

Ending her career at this song, this is probably her best track.  It was like almost on Heavenly’s territory but still has the February pop flavor in it.  Tomoko sounds more lively and the synths together make a pretty cool song.  It’s actually can be considered dance with how the synths are used.  Pretty spiffy song if you ask me.

2. Is this feeling love?

Sounds a bit more serious than “Lonely in Gorgeous” maybe a little more like a love song…then again look at the title.  The chorus has her descending notes and using so pretty good English.  It’s just totally different sound from the 1st track and sounds so much more powerful.

3. E-mail♥ more

Definitly in the reins of 80’s synth-pop…You can really tell that this was a nod to the past.  It’s just got the girliness and pep that actually helped out very well.  Tommy sounds like she was being cute, maybe sexii.  Who knows.  Though, the song is somewhat obvious and kind of annoying after a while but it’s ok or a few listens.

Tommy February6’s final single was so cool.  All 3 songs are different from each other.  Sad that this was her final before leading out with TH6…Definitly a single to get.
